Call for Papers: Seminar Series in International Political Sociology

The Dutch network of International Political Sociology has launched the Call for Papers for its seminar series 2023. As a transdisciplinary approach to the study of International Relations, International Political Sociology (IPS) offers alternative lenses to understand global politics and social relations through a wide range of analytical perspectives and empirical research strategies.

The seminar series offers a forum where early career scholars can: (1) present their work and receive feedback from peers and senior academics in the field; (2) engage with contemporary IPS research designs and debates; and (3) develop transdisciplinary and cross-institutional relationships with a view to facilitating further discussions and collaborations around common research themes.

As part of the international research group “Doing IPS,” the Dutch IPS network provides a platform for scholars interested in transdisciplinary modes of inquiry to present and debate their research. From PhD candidates to senior scholars, we invite you to join us in pursuing the development of this space for collaboration!

After a successful launch last year, the second iteration of the Dutch IPS Seminar Series seeks to continue the promotion of International Political Sociology’s commitment to challenge methodological and conceptual assumptions, and invites scholars to ask new questions about transdisciplinary modes of inquiry. It will offer, once again, a forum dedicated to IPS where early career scholars can: (1) present their work and receive feedback from peers and senior academics in the field; (2) engage with contemporary IPS research designs and debates; and (3) develop transdisciplinary and cross-institutional relationships with a view to facilitating further discussions and collaborations around common research themes.

Aims

As a transdisciplinary approach to the study of International Relations, International Political Sociology (IPS) offers alternative lenses to understand global politics and social relations through a wide range of analytical perspectives and empirical research strategies. IPS can be thought of as a collective intellectual project which rejects traditional boundaries between disciplines or knowledges and seeks to challenge fundamental oppositions within traditional theorizing, such as that between politics and society, the individual and the collective, structure and agency, internal and external, international and national.

Themes in IPS

We welcome papers that speak to IPS and affiliated themes including (but not limited to):

• Critical theory and methodologies (e.g. critical making or multi-modal methods)
• Migration and borders
• Security and surveillance
• Science and technology studies
• Ethnography and fieldwork methodologies
• Critical race theory and global justice
• Coloniality
• Queer, trans, and feminist theory
• Climate change and ecology
• Algorithmic politics

Programme

This second IPS Seminar Series will run monthly from January to June 2023. During each two-hour seminar, two participants will discuss a piece of work-in-progress (around 8000-10,000 words of a thesis chapter, book chapter or journal manuscript). They will invite a senior academic to act as a discussant. The discussion will be followed by questions and comments from the audience. All attendees are encouraged to participate regularly and actively.

All sessions will be held online or hybrid. We also intend to organize several physical events as part of the IPS network for scholars to meet each other and connect offline.

Application

Applications for the IPS Seminar Series should include:

• A short bio (name, institutional affiliation, the year of your PhD, keywords that describe your research interests)
• A statement on how your work relates to IPS (1-5 short sentences max.)
• An abstract of the work you would like to present (250 words)

The deadline for applications is Friday, 9th December 2022. Notifications of acceptance will be sent before Christmas.
