Medicinesand health services research: integrated pharmaceutical care

Pharmacy Health Services research is the research the multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that examines how social factors, financing systems, organisationalstructures and processes, health technologies, and personalbehavioursaffect access to pharmaceutical care, the quality and costs of pharmaceutical care, and ultimately our health and well-being. Often the care process starts with the prescription of a medicine where prescriber and patient jointly decide on a treatment. Next, the pharmacy delivers the medicine, monitors use and guides the patient in the use of the medicine. Finally, there is the use by the patient. This process is embedded in a healthcare system and subject to policy measures. The ultimate use of medicines is a result of a combination of influences that play within this entire process. In this presentation,LisetvanDijkaddresses a wide range of her research activities in the pharmaceutical care process. Hereby she pays attention to various forms of research including research based on the NIVEL Primary Care Database, a large nationwide database. Some examples of studies that are discussed in the presentation are: the effects of theThyrax® shortage on clinical and other outcomes in patients, the influence of policy measures on the use of medicines, the development of practical tools for the pharmacy team, and stimulating proper use of antibiotics in six Southern and Eastern European countries. She will also discuss the societal impact of these studies.
