PIL on Tuesday 12th November

When:Tu 12-11-2019 12:00 - 13:00
Dear colleagues and students,
This PILwill be given by Wouter Hinrichs from the group of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy.

Stabilization and Formulation of Therapeutic Proteins

Due to the unraveling of the human genome at the end of the previous century and recent developments in the field of biotechnology and recombinant DNA technology, we have a growing number of proteins available that can be used to treat a large variety of diseases. Proteins are produced as aqueous solutions. In an aqueous environment, however, proteins are often highly unstable, limiting their shelf life. Furthermore, because of rapid degradation in the gastro-intestinal tract, proteins can only be administered parenterally, which is patient unfriendly. It is well known that proteins can be stabilized by drying them in the presence of sugars. Having the protein in a dry and stable state, patient friendly dosage forms can be developed. In this presentation, novel sugar combinations for the stabilization of proteins and alternative dosage forms which are studied within the department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy will be described.
