The Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GSMS) trains and educates excellent researchers and promotes excellent research. The GSMS is responsible for all research, Research Master and PhD training, including the 'Junior Scientific Masterclass’, a special track for talented medical students, within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
Research within the GSMS ranges from fundamental to patient-oriented (clinical) research. The GSMS deals with five main scientific areas, which originate in five Research Institutes. In each Research Institute the UMCG focus on Healthy Ageing is approached from the institutes central theme (see below). The five Research Institutes are:
1. Cancer Research Center Groningen (CRCG)

2. Research Institute Brain and Cognition*
(central theme: Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences)
3. Research Institute GUIDE
(central theme: Chronic Diseases and Drug Exploration)
4. Research Institute SHARE
(central theme: Health Research/Prevention)
5. Research Institute W.J. Kolff
(central theme: Biomaterials)
*The Research Institute Brain and Cognition of the UMCG participate in the Research School of Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN) of the University of Groningen.
