The Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences has in-depth expertise in four broad research areas, and aims to integrate knowledge into interdisciplinary programmes. In particular, staff members work together in integrative research topics (iTopics), specific research programmes within the FSE focal theme Adaptive Life. For practical purposes staff members are organised in expertise groups, cooperative assemblies of research units with similar research interests that commonly share support staff, facilities and sometimes teaching responsibilities.
GELIFES also harbours expertise in a number of sub-fields of biology, including population & evolutionary genetics, plant & animal physiology, medical biology, marine biology, biodiversity & conservation biology, mathematical & computational biology. Staff members are grouped under the broad research area of their primary interest below.
