Reservoir computing is a popular computational model for many simulated and unconventional substrates. We have developed CHARC, a framework to characterise how well some material substrate can instantiate and implement a given computational model.  We have applied this to a reservoir computing model instantiated in carbon nanotubes, and also in simulations. I will discuss this framework in detail, and describe how we are using it to evaluate the computational power of various material and simulated substrates, from carbon nanotubes to DNA computers, and to explore and design aspects of reservoir topology and hierarchical reservoir systems.
