Speaker: Acclaimed China watcher Anne Meijdam
When
: Monday 6 October 2014, 20:00-21:30
Where: Senate Hall, Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen
Who: Centre for East Asian Studies with Groningen Studium Generale
Why: What's happening and what are the demonstrations about? Will Hong Kong's democratic aspirations prove to be China's stumbling block? How can and will China react to the growing unrest in Hong Kong?

Anne Meijdam
: "The current protests in Hong Kong are the Chinese Communist Party’s worst nightmare. The fear is that if not properly contained, the street protests could flare into China’s own version of a color revolution. But even without such a dramatic and still probably very unlikely outcome, equally damaging is what the protests are doing now to the standing of president Xi Jinping and the rest of the top Chinese leadership. Just as Beijing tries to prove it is still fully in charge despite China's many problems, including corruption, income inequality, and social unrest, the protests are sending just the opposite message."

Anne Meijdam
(1958) worked over twenty years in China as a correspondent for various international news organizations, including Asiaweek, CNN, Radio France International, International Herald Tribune, NOS and Dutch national newspapers such as Trouw, de Volkskrant, de Telegraaf and Groene Amsterdammer. In July 2014 Mr. Meijdam returned to the Netherlands to work as an independent China analyst and commentator.
