Scandinavian Linguistics

Charlotte Gooskens uses experimental methods and exact measurement techniques to investigate the role of linguistic and non-linguistic factors for the mutual intelligibility between closely related languages, for example between the Scandinavian languages.

Remco Knooihuizen works on West Scandinavian languages. He is particularly interested in language variation and change in Faroese, and in the historical linguistics of the extinct language Shetland Norn. In both cases, language contact — with Danish, English, and Scots — also plays an important role.

Anja Schüppert investigates communication across language borders both within and outside Scandinavia, as well as the role that English as Lingua Franca plays in these communicative situations. She is particularly interested in individual and societal costs and benefits of English-medium instruction in Swedish and Dutch higher education.

Janine Strandberg works on sociolinguistics in Scandinavian/Nordic languages. Her doctoral research focuses on phonetic and lexical change in the Swedish variety spoken in Finland, and she has a special interest in minority languages and bilingualism.
