The Research Colloquium is a collaborative initiative by the several departments of the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies. Although the Groningen Faculty will play a key role in this research initiative, it is crucial to include international scholars who can contribute to the various aspects of the overall theme. At the University of Aarhus research is carried out that in many regards intersects with the Groningen initiative. Prof. Dr. Anders Klostergaard Petersen from the Aarhus Faculty of Theology is involved in the Research Colloquium. In addition, scholars from a number of European and non-European universities will take part in the Colloquium.

The Research Colloquium runs from 2009 through 2010, with four meetings in Groningen, a workshop in Aarhus, and a conference in Groningen. The meetings comprise of a lecture that discusses the general topic with a focus on one specific perspective, followed by a detailed response and discussion. The invited scholar will be asked to give a master class for graduate students (open to students from the University of Groningen and from other universities), either on the topic of the Colloquium or on another topic that is of special interest for graduate students. Students can book a “package deal” that includes the lecture, an overnight stay in Groningen, and the master class.
The conference will serve two objectives: on the one hand, the theoretical framework will be explored in more detail; on the other hand, the results of the Research Colloquium will be discussed and further perspectives will be included. In 2011, an edited volume will be prepared on the basis of the lectures and the conference, to be submitted to the Numen Book Series (Leiden & Boston: Brill; volume editors: Kocku von Stuckrad, George van Kooten & Anders Klostergaard Petersen).
