Title:   Emotional detection for its use on biomedical systems

Abstract:

Emotion recognition is an interesting aspect to investigate due to its use in various applications. As for example, to find out how the emotions acted upon hearing a sentence of speech of a politician, or to take control of a customer in a call center. When an emotion is expressed, it is due to the way of acting and the way of relating on our environment. We decide what product to take home when shopping; this decision is made by the advertising, which reaches by television (and other media) on images of different products from different companies. Another application is in the biomedical field. In particular, the loss of emotion is one of the symptoms for the detection of neurodegenerative diseases. To build a tool to detect and display this value, it would facilitate the work of neurologists in this task. This talk will show a system that applies this hypothesis based on a novel mode. It will be shown how is possible to detect the emotional stage based on the facial information of a patient, captured by a webcam.

Brief CV Carlos M. Travieso-González received the M.Sc. degree in 1997 in Telecommunication Engineering at Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Spain; and Ph.D. degree in 2002 at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC-Spain). He is an Associate Professor from 2001 in ULPGC, teaching subjects on signal processing and learning theory. He passed the first of three steps to be Full Professor under Spanish Government supervision. His research lines are biometrics, biomedical signals, data mining, classification system, signal and image processing, pattern recognition, and environmental intelligence. He has researched in more than 45 International and Spanish Research Projects, some of them as head researcher. He is co-author of 3 books, co-editor of 10 Proceedings Book, Guest Editor for five JCR-ISI international journals and up to 14 book chapters. He has over 320 papers published in international journals and conferences (46 of them indexed on JCR – ISI - Web of Science). He has published three patents and four more is under revision on Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. He has been supervisor on four PhD Thesis (and 6 more in process), and 100 Master Thesis. He has been reviewer in different international journals (<35) and conferences (<60) since 2001. He is member of IASTED Technical Committee on Image Processing from 2007, member of IASTED Technical Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems from 2011 and member of IASTED Technical Committee on Signal Processing from 2014. He is founder and president of the IEEE-IWOBI conference series and InnoEducaTIC symposium series. He was IEEE-IWOBI 2015 General Chair, InnoEducaTIC 2014 General Chair, IEEE-IWOBI 2014 General Chair, EEE-INES 2013 General Chair, NoLISP 2011 General Chair, JRBP 2012 General Chair and IEEE-ICCST 2005 Co-Chair. He was Vice-Dean from 2004 to 2010 in Higher Technical School of Telecommunication Engineers in ULPGC. Nowadays, he is a Vice-Dean of Head of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies from March 2013.
