Title: Technical action research in software engineering: alidating technology in practice

Abstract:

Design science research in software engineering (SE) consists of developing and empirically investigating the use of software engineering techniques. One problem in design science is how to validate new technology before it has been transferred to practice. The solution is to start testing under idealized conditions in the laboratory and gradually scale up to uncontrolled conditions of practice. In this talk I discuss methods for validating new SE technology, in particular the method of Technical Action Research (TAR).

TAR is a research method in which a researcher uses a new technique developed by him- or herself in practice to help a client solve a real-world problem. For the client this is free consultancy, for the researcher it is a real-world validation. I present the methodological structure of TAR and give a number of examples of TAR projects. In particular, I will discuss how generalizations from single TAR projects can be based on analogical reasoning and what the strengths and limitations of this reasoning are.

CV: Roel Wieringa occupies the chair of Information Systems at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. His research interests include requirements engineering, conceptual modelling, and research methodology for software engineering and the design sciences. He has written two books, Requirements Engineering: Frameworks for Understanding (Wiley, 1996) and Design Methods for Reactive Systems: Yourdon, Statemate and the UML (Morgan Kaufmann, 2003). His book Design Science Methodology fir Information Systems and Software Engineering will appear with Springer in 2014.

Roel Wieringa is head of the group of Information and Software Systems Engineering at the University of Twente, the Netherlands. He has been head of the Computer Science Department from 2006 – 2009 and scientific director of the Dutch National Research School for Information and Knowledge Systems (SIKS) from 2006 to 2011.
