Title: Talking about Shapes

                           

Abstract:

     Whenever people have had to cooperate in building anything they
have needed precise ways of talking about their joint work. We now
have to cooperate with the computers which drive our screens and our
manufacturing machines, and which compute aspects of performance of
the products we design. We need ways of talking to them to tell them
what shapes we want. The talk looks at ways in which shapes have been
described from the 12th century to today (focussing mainly on the
second half of the 20th century) identifying how different techniques
became possible as computers became more powerful, and considers the
reasons why some new methods have been adopted and others not.

Biography:
     Malcolm A. Sabin is director of Numerical Geometry, Ltd, an
independent consultancy company. In addition to his industrial
consultancy, he has collaborated with the Universities of Cambridge
(engineering, computer science and mathematics) and Cardiff (computer
science). He has worked in 3D surface modelling since the 1960s, is
particularly known for Doo-Sabin subdivision and Powell-Sabin splines,
and is the recipient of the Pierre Bezier award (2010), the John
Gregory award (2011) and the IMA Gold Medal (2012), and was recognised
as a Solid Modeling Pioneer in 2016.
