Title: Darwin: Everywhere and all the time

Abstract:

Biological diversity does not make sense without evolution. However, evolution does not just explain species. Its effects can be seen and measured at many levels, from DNA to cells to organisms and ecological niches. In this talk, I will describe how evolution has created dietary adaptation in the Maasai over 5000 years, how it allows the FLU virus to evolve and adapt each year and how it has created tissue specific ribosome mRNA signatures in eukaryotes over 1-2 billion years. Finally, I will describe how the 1-100 million year old junk retroviral DNA in our genomes is now being used in immune therapy. The talk will be non-technical and accessible to everyone, from poets to physicists to mathematicians.

Colloquium coordinators are Prof.dr. D. Karastoyanova and Prof. dr. M. Biehl.
