Circumpolar Ethnoarchaeology

This research focuses on the anthropology, ethnography and ethno-history of northern (Arctic, sub-Arctic, higher-latitude) hunter-fisher-gatherer and reindeer-herding populations, and aims to investigate the multiple intersections between human action, material culture and the environment. The aim is to generate ethnoarchaeological insights into the structuring of cultural landscapes and to understand what generates patterning in technology and associated cultural traits. Ethnoarchaeological research at the Arctic Centre in Groningen embraces investigation of sacred landscape geography of northern Eurasia, and also includes comparative analysis of how social-learning dynamics feed into the diversification of material culture traditions among various ethno-linguistic groups in Northwest Siberia and Western North America.
