The course unit evaluation procedure

About 70 course units are evaluated extensively every year. For comments and suggestions about the other course units short questionnaires are available on Brightspace after the exam periods. The results of these brief evaluations will be sent to the Director of Studies.

The procedure for the extensive evaluation is as follows:

  1. The Director of Studies selects the courses to be evaluated; every course is evaluated at least once every three years.
At the start of each exam period a list of course units to be evaluated is sent to the exam committee.
  2. However, the course units in the propaedeutic phase are evaluated every year in the same way – digitally, using a short questionnaire that is sent to students immediately after the exam, or if the course unit is not rounded off with an exam, after the last lecture. Starting in the academic year 2011-2012, this will also apply to the LLB course units. In addition, one propaedeutic course unit is evaluated in depth in each evaluation round, i.e. with a longer paper questionnaire and an evaluation meeting (see explanation below).
  3. The lecturers of the course units in question receive a standard questionnaire to which they can propose changes: add, remove and/or alter questions.
  4. The questionnaire is handed out to the students straight after the exam, or if there is no final exam, during the last seminar.
  5. The students who have taken the exam or the course unit (if there is no written exam) are invited to apply to attend the evaluation meeting. Furthermore, a representative of the programme committee concerned may attend the evaluation meeting.
  6. Depending on the course unit’s size three to five students who have applied will receive an invitation to attend the evaluation meeting.
  7. The evaluation meeting with lecturer(s) and students will be chaired by a staff member of the International Office, and attended by the Director of Studies.
  8. The minutes of the evaluation meeting will be submitted for approval to the participants.
  9. The results of the questionnaires and the minutes of the evaluation meetings will be sent to the Faculty Board, the Faculty Council, the Course Committees and the chairpersons of the Departments.
  10. At the start of a new term the Quality Assurance department will ask the lecturer responsible which changes have been made with regard to the points for improvement.
  11. The minutes of the evaluation meetings will be available for perusal at the Information Desk (Infobalie) in the Office for Student Affairs.

Evaluation meetings can also be arranged for a particular reason, such as a new module or a new lecturer.
