Comparative Criminal Law (6 ECTS)

Brief course description: The lecture course Comparative Criminal Law offers a review of selected topics in comparative substantive criminal law. The basis will be formed by an introduction into the concept of comparative criminal law (lecture 1), in which its functions, aims and methods will be discussed. In the following lectures various subjects will be treated in a comparative perspective: culpability, double jeopardy (non bis in idem), sanctions and prison systems, homicide and the criminal liability of corporations. A compulsory excursion to Norgerhaven Prison (Veenhuizen) is part of the course. The last meeting in the course will consist of a Question and Answer session. The course will be concluded by a three hour written examination. The legal comparison will focus primarily on continental criminal justices systems and Anglo-American criminal justice systems.
Teaching method: lectures, in-class discussion, excursion.
Assessment: essay exam.
