Advancing skills.

- demonstrate an understanding of the structure, institutions, sources of law and law-making
procedures in international and European Union law;
- demonstrate an understanding of aspects of substantive international and European Union
- explain how international and European Union law interacts with the domestic law of states;
- identify relevant legal aspects of international societal issues; and
- find relevant sources to apply the law to practical problems or in case studies.
Omschrijving The module is intended to provide students insight into the basics of law in an international context.

It will allow the students to understand the specific characteristics of public international law and European Union law as separate legal systems, but in addition to that it will focus on how the various legal systems interact with each other and with domestic legal orders. By choosing a core theme, case or situation, we will study the way in which international law and European law contribute to create stable environments for tackling challenging transboundary problems such as economic cooperation, migration, protecting the ecosystem or peace and security. This study will have an interdisciplinary as well as practice-oriented approach in which students are expected to contribute to socratic discussions from their respective backgrounds. Basic knowledge of international and European law is essential in understanding international processes of cooperation and decision making, both in a public (governments, international organisations) and in a private (business) context.
