Omschrijving A course on the nexus between politics, journalism and citizenship, and the relation between rational thinking, information, and democracy. Taking our point of departure in democratic theory, we trace the parallel and intertwine paths of information-media and democracy. How do news media foster citizenship and deliberative democracy? We discuss the Lippmann-Dewey debate on the best form of democracy: well-informed elites versus well-educated masses. We then discuss a range of theoretical concepts (the public sphere, public opinion, deliberation) and communicative forms (journalism, online political talk, political satire), while we will conclude with discussing the limits of free speech. During a weekly “public sphere breakfast” (seminar) we will discuss the readings and relate them to the news and current affairs. In our weekly project group meetings we will design and conduct mini projects that link the theoretical discussions with contemporary events and current affairs
