1 | Bachelor's Thesis BDK-A&C | EBB924B10 |

8 | Bachelor's Thesis IB | EBB737B10 |
A week before the start of the semester, several themes are announced on Nestor. After the introduction lecture, students hand in their theme preferences and are assigned to a theme and an associated supervisor, on the basis of preferences and previous study performance. Within the theme that students have been assigned to, they identify a relevant problem. Next, students develop a research design and conduct their research individually. The theme’s supervisor sets intermediate deadlines, organizes a series of workshops and individual meetings, which allow all students to regularly discuss their thesis setup, progress and preliminary research results. Thus, they receive regular feedback both from their peers and the theme’s supervisor. At the end of the semester the students submit their bachelor’s thesis, which is a structured and balanced report that critically analyzes a relevant problem and discusses the research findings and their implications. |

13 | Deal Phase | EBE054A10 |
The deal phase is the most visible and the most risky part of the M&A process. Competitive bidding situations, time pressure, information asymmetries, the involvement of a myriad of business functions and advisers and the potential for conflicts of interest contribute to this. Teaching in this course is highly interdisciplinary, reflecting the professional world of the students. Lecturers include, amongst others, investment bankers, due diligence advisers, M&A lawyers, tax advisers and acquisition finance specialists. Besides academic and management literature, teaching is to a large extent based on case studies. Cases studies for example include: - the optimal design of the sales process of a company; - from value to price: how to update the valuation for due diligence findings, apply the closing mechanism, and ‘translation’ in the SPA; - a structuring and negotiations case, aimed at how to apply a valuation valuations in negotiations and deal structuring; - an acquisition financing case; - a fairness opinion. |

14 | Economic Development | EBM095B05 |
Why are some countries poor and some countries rich? This course will introduce you to the debate about strategies for sustained growth and development in today's world. Global economic growth has been rapid since the 1950s, but uneven across countries and major challenges to growth have appeared in the last decade. What were successful growth strategies in the past? Which policies have contributed to this success? What are the new growth challenges ahead at the regional and global level and how can we cope with these? Based on the explanatory growth framework of Angus Maddison we delve into the possibilities of generating development. We discuss new global trends that provide both opportunities and challenges for growth and development, and end the course with an evaluation of possible policy options against this background. This will be done by in-depth study and discussion of major articles in this field. |

18 | Externe Verslaggeving Research | EBE024A05 |

22 | Int. Fin. Institutions and Governance | EBM198A05 |
This course will provide students with an overview of the theoretical and empirical literature on the main themes in international financial institutions and governance. The aim is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of how multinationals finance their operations and investments, taking the perspective from the supply side. During the course we will discuss what role (international) banks, stock markets, different types of investors (such as institutional investors, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds, etc.) play in financing these companies. We will also discuss the consequences of the different types of finance for the governance of these companies. We will deal with these issues by discussing a number of academic articles on related topics. Moreover, we will discuss cases describing the role of various suppliers of finance and their consequences for the governance of multinationals. These cases will be prepared by teams of students and presented during tutorials. |

23 | International Business Strategy (MSc) | EBM088A05 |
The design and implementation of a successful international business strategy (IBS) is key for the sustainable performance of many companies. IBS enables companies to successfully differentiate themselves from their competitors. IBS is directly relevant for the performance of companies but also for other stakeholders including the employees, citizens and policy-makers. Among others, policy-makers aim to develop regions or countries. Enabling companies to develop and implement the best strategy benefits economic growth and general well-being. However, some companies are very successful in IBS whereas others fail. IBS is not a product that can be bought on a market ? companies need to develop and learn IBS themselves. This course is dedicated to obtaining in-depth knowledge and (research) experience about the multifaceted nature of IBS. Virtually all students in the FEB programs continue a non-academic career in business or public management. Understanding the causes and consequences of successful IBS, therefore, is of the utmost importance for FEB students. Questions about IBS are relevant for almost all companies in which FEB students will work. The course is also relevant for students that have an ambition to work in the public sector such as a Ministry of Economic Affairs or a healthcare institute or international organizations such as the World Bank or the EU. These organizations also are confronted with IBS challenges next to and on top of being part of the context in which for-profit firms design and implement IBS. This advanced course in IBS moves far beyond what is learned in bachelor courses of strategy and management. We will study key elements of IBS such as management and leadership, organization structure, strategic alliances, global environments and ethical issues. For each of these themes, we will review leading theories, learn about best-practices and study a wide variety of research methods needed to come to grips with the causes and consequences of successful IBS. Students that enter the course accept the conditions of the program and the advanced level of the IBS subjects. Students need to prepare a great number of journal articles each week in order to constructively contribute to tutorial discussions and presentations. Additionally, the course requires students to collect data and conduct analysis relating to a strategic topic, and complete a written exam with essay questions. Not meeting any of the standards of the course will have implications for the grade. The course requires students to develop, use and appreciate (advanced) interdisciplinary theoretical models and (advanced) multi-method perspectives in combination with best-practice managerial cases that characterize modern IBS. |

25 | International Financial Reporting | EBM045B05 |
The course introduces the subject of international financial accounting and explains the relevance thereof. The course will be built upon the idea that financial statements are meant to inform public investors. Throughout the course, specific international issues regarding the analysis of accounting based ratio's will be addressed. Such issues relate of course to international diversity in financial accounting systems. The most important differences in international financial accounting systems will be presented. Recently, huge steps have been taken in regard of international convergence and harmonization, as well as auditing and corporate governance. Important international financial reporting subjects such as the assessment of foreign currency risks and hedge accounting as well as the consolidation process on a parent company level will be covered. International tax regimes are presented and potential consequences thereof discussed such as tax saving models developed by multinationals. The development in international accounting, auditing and governance rules and standards are critically reviewed during this course. |

After an internship has been found, the student is required to ask for admittance based on an internship proposal. Once the proposal has been approved by the Programme Internship Coordinator, the student is admitted to start the Internship and qualifies for acquiring credits after finishing the internship and reflection (portfolio) successfully. | Opmerkingen | The Internship in Masters of FEB is available in all FEB master programmes with the exeption of the Research Master. Students need to be registered as a student at the University of Groningen during the internship. The credits are extra-curricular credits (i.e., on top of the regular programme) and will be listed officially on the diploma supplement at the moment of graduation. Students that are enrolled in the internship master FEB cannot do the Master thesis project at the same time or in the same organization, so one of them has to be postponed to the next semester. Please contact your Programme Internship Coordinator to discuss your case if it differs from the regular pattern. |

28 | IT in Control | EBM191A05 |

Mixed teams of maximum four students (both from bachelor and master programmes in Economics and Business) will examine a real managerial issue. They translate the issue into a problem statement that can be addressed within the time frame of this course. Inherent parts of this course are that mixed teams of students 1) visit the company, 2) carry out desk research and literature search, 3) develop a research design (qualitative and/or quantitative), 4) analyze the results 5) draw conclusions and 6) propose a feasible solution including implementation steps to address the problem of a company. Bachelor students have to reflect on the research process and their role as junior consultant and researcher. |

30 | Management Accounting Techniques | EBM057A05 |
The course elaborates on the knowledge gained during previous courses on management accounting (although for some students this course may be a first encounter with the field). The objective of the course is to gain an understanding of the operation and purpose of advanced (sustainable) management accounting and control instruments. The tools provided by management accounting are studied in a context of the managerial control of organizations. The course uses Excel as primary tool for applying accounting techniques and developing decision making instruments. After following the course, students should be able to: identify the purpose of accounting systems in different situations and understand how they influence the organization's planning, control and decision making, identify and analyze control problems in organizations, use and critically analyze the various quantitative techniques (also in relation to more qualitative management control instruments), design, select, and appraise accounting instruments of organizations. |

31 | Management Control for A&C | EBB102B05 |
The course Management Control discusses various instruments and systems in the field of management accounting and management control. These instruments and systems can help managers to increase the sharing of goals between the employees, as well as their cooperation, so that the attainment of organizational goals is facilitated. They can also supply information for decision making and control in organizations. Cases and exercises provide the students with hands on experience concerning these instruments and systems. Although computational skills will play some role in the course, they are certainly not its main focus. Of greater importance are the problems of choosing the most appropriate instruments and systems in a specific situation and the issue how general management can use the accounting information and other information in their tasks of decision making and planning & control. Different factors can influence the role and function of management accounting and control in organizations. On the basis of the course book and various articles the control instruments and their organizational context are discussed. Short case studies will be used to learn about these issues. Students will work on exercises and cases in small teams. Each team will also give a presentation on a specific subject using additional literature and propositions, and/or write a short case report. |

32 | Managing Cultural Differences | EBM190A05 |
In the course of your career, you will be required to work in and/ or manage culturally diverse teams. This course is set up to provide theoretical frameworks to understand cultural differences, and apply the concepts learned to manage cultural differences in a real world virtual, multinational team. It seeks to provide an in-depth, theoretical, understanding of three core issues: a) what culture is, b) divergence and convergence in cultural values and practices around the world, and c) the influence of cultural values and practices on business behaviours and outcomes such as communication, leadership, global strategy and ethics. Moreover, based on principles of adult learning and to cater to the demands of the real world, you will be required to apply concepts by participating in a unique experiential exercise: the X-culture project. This exercise requires you to work with students from overseas universities over several weeks to solve a real world strategic issue faced by a company and give them advice. By combining theory and application, the course aims to help you to learn about and improve your cross-cultural competencies. |

33 | Managing Intern. Bus. Organizations Game | EBB638B05 |
The course consists of weekly lectures, tutorials, a business panel session and an exam. The lectures orientate on the basic topics of the course and are based on the assigned literature in the Virtual Reader (see Nestor) Three of the lectures will be given by Managers from MNEs, who will present the internationalization path of their respective companies. Also, they will present in more detail a case problem relevant to the international position of their company. Students have to write an essay about the market position and performance of one of the companies and present a plan which addresses the case problem as outlined by the guest lecturer of that company. The last tutorial is in the form of a business panel, where business managers will be presented the best plans, as pre-selected by tutors. During the course, students will be trained to present their results in a convincing way to the business panel. They will learn to do the presentation in such a way that the panel is not only informed, but also prepared to accept the results. |

47 | Master's Thesis HRM | EBM722B20 |
The Master’s Thesis logically flows from the Research and Professional Skills for HRM course. In the Research Skills part of that course, students will write a research proposal in which they specify a research question, transform this into hypotheses, and propose a methodology to assess these. During the Master’s Thesis, students will carry out this research proposal in order to (empirically) assess the research question and proposed hypotheses. The Master’s Thesis has an appointed starting moment and an appointed moment of submission (i.e., deadline). The thesis report should be written in the form of a journal article as outlined in the thesis brochure "Short and Good". |

53 | Master's Thesis SCM | EBM720B20 |
The student has to complete an individual scientific research project in the field of Supply Chain Management. The project can be executed either within a company or as a subproject of a university project. Details will be discussed in a special meeting on the Master's thesis SCM. With the Master thesis you give proof of your academic ability. This last phase of the study offers you the opportunity to produce an academic piece of work in the area of Supply Chain Management and to explore this area in-depth. In your thesis, you demonstrate and report in a systematic, objective and verifiable way, on the knowledge you have acquired and contributions you made in line with academic research. Writing a clear research proposal is the first essential step in this course. Guidance is offered by means of lectures, related to all components of a successful scientific proposal, such as defining the problem definition and research questions, stating the significance of the research, critically discuss the literature, selecting and motivating the appropriate research methods to answer the research questions, and planning of the project. The next step is to actually undertake the research (collect, analyse, and interpret quantitative and/or qualitative data with appropriate techniques) and draw conclusions, make recommendations, generalise findings and identify limitations. You will report on all aspects mentioned by means of a master thesis and presentations. In the Master Supply Chain Management, research themes will be formulated. Groups of students with a similar theme will be supervised by a lecturer in group meetings in a structured way following deadlines set by the faculty. |

56 | Operations Modelling and Simulation | EBM029A05 |
Models are commonly used vehicles to describe, analyse and (re)design industrial and service operations. This course focuses on the development and use of conceptual models and coded models within simulation studies. Conceptual models capture the relevant model objectives, scope, and level of detail, starting from a defined problem and set of project objectives. Essentially, they offer an explicit, documented representation of a real-world, or proposed real-world system. Next, coded simulation models build on conceptual models and serve as a tool for quantitative analysis. A sound setup and analysis of experiments links the use of the coded model to decision support for operations (re)design. The first part of the course familiarises students with model building, experimentation, and output analysis by exploring and applying a simulation tool. The second part of the course relates simulation use to industrial practice, assuming a simulation study to be part of a project. Key issues addressed concern the definition of a conceptual model, data collection and input analysis, model coding, verification and validation, and decision support, i.e. reporting study findings. |

57 | Personnel Economics | EBM678A05 |
Central to the course is the application of economic principles to the field of Human Resources Management. Knowledge of these principles enables a human resource manager or general manager (responsible for personnel matters) to communicate with financial and other managers about effects and efficiency of personnel policies. These principles provide the manager with tools for gathering data from different information systems for effective use with regard to personnel decisions, too. Personnel economics suggests which data are necessary for taking meaningful decisions. The course is not only concerned with costs and benefits of personnel but investigates a wide range of personnel policies. Problems that will be dealt with are: when and how much to invest in personnel, how to select personnel, whom should be dismissed etc. Much attention will be paid to compensation. Should employees receive incentive pay or an hourly wage? Should employees work in teams or should they specialise? Attention will also be paid to non-monetary rewards, gossip, and politicking. The main advantage of this course is the clear application of economic principles to a wide range of topics. Students learn the underlying economic principles of HR instruments. Knowledge of these principles can be used in all kinds of situations. The course will give the students new solutions for existing problems and shows why some of the standard practices should be changed. |

58 | Research & Professional Skills for HRM | EBM009B05 |
In the Research Skills part of the course (60%), students will be prepared to write a research proposal, and to conduct six assignments over the course of seven tutorial sessions. These sessions will cover basic topics such as writing introductions, identifying and creating good research questions, and transforming these into conceptual models, but also more advanced topics suchas quantitative data analysis, moderation hypotheses, and mediation hypotheses. The main goal of this course is for students to write a proper research proposal which they will carry out during their Master’s Thesis. By doing so, students should be optimally equipped to start their Master’s Thesis in the most effective and efficient way possible. In the preceding half-semester (sem. 1.1 and 2.1), a 2-hour introduction will prepare students for the start of the Professional Skills training course (40% of the entire course): exploring skills and competencies required for the field of HR. Subsequently, students will identify learning goals on the basis of individual assignments of their current levels of effective communication and social skills, and will submit a professional development plan. The 4-day training course explores a variety of work-related themes during which students will work on competencies by practicing, observing, and reflecting on their own experiences. The training is geared both to students’ personal leadership during the master’s programme and to working as HR professionals after graduation. A reflection report and a coaching session will complete the course. |

59 | Research & Skills for MSc BA | EBM050A05 |
This course aims to prepare students for their Master's thesis projects. It focuses on methodological and professional skills preparation, as well as research ethics. For research methods, students have to gain some basic knowledge about the topics. In weeks 1-3 there are two lectures about theory building, quantitative research methods and qualitative research methods and a MC test about lectures and literature. In weeks 4-7 students are introduced to either quantitative or qualitative tutorials. More in-depth topics about corresponding topics are introduced, how to develop a research proposal following the favored quantitative or qualitative approach is explained, and an existing research proposal is judged by the students. In week 9 a research proposal must be delivered. Presence in the lectures and tutorials is optional. For skills training, students set individual learning goals on the basis of an assessment of their current interactional and communication skills. In profile-specific groups of 15 students, we will work on these competencies by practicing, observing and reflecting on individual experiences during the Master's thesis period and with a view to the professional field. Real-life cases will be used to explore options in interactional skills. Varying per profile, competencies include listening and feedback skills, effective interactional skills, dealing with ambiguities and resistance, self-reflection, consultancy skills, empathy, persuasive skills and personal leadership. The training will be completed by group coaching. Full attendance of training sessions is required. For research ethics four online modules of the CITI program must be successfully passed through, plagiarism, privacy and confidentiality, data management, and misconduct. Each module includes a short introductory lecture, study materials, and a MC test. If you pass the test you will receive a certificate that should be handed over to the course coordinator in order to receive a course grade. |

64 | Research Projects in Emerging Markets | EBB937B10 |

69 | Strategic Supply Chain Management | EBM039A05 |
Almost all companies face an increased complexity in their supply chains caused by global competition, more demanding customers, worldwide outsourcing and sustainability requirements. This course introduces students to strategic and global aspects of manufacturing and supply chain management. The course offers an overview of contemporary theoretical findings in the field through a book and lectures, complemented with research papers, which are assessed in a literature examination. Specifically, the course focuses on buyer-supplier relationships, the use of ICT in those relations, the role of outsourcing, and the importance of sustainability and corporate social responsibility in shaping supply chains. Students have to complete several practical oriented cases and are trained in using and evaluating literature through writing reviews of relevant scientific papers. The final part of the course is a group based project that aims at playing a supply chain game and theoretically interpreting and evaluating the results. |
