Arts Sociology II is an introduction to the most important theories of (art-)sociology. In this course unit it is demonstrated how these theories are used in art sociological research. Furthermore, each theory is criticized, partly by contrasting the theories to one another. The focus is on four theories: (1) Pierre Bourdieu’s distinction theory, (2) Howard Becker’s art world theory, (3) the Art field theory of Pierre Bourdieu, (4) and basic concepts of Actor-Network theory. As the course builds on Sociology of the Arts I: Introduction, the same broad conception of art is used, encompassing professional theatre, dance, visual arts, but also film, pop music, folklore, traditional dances, etc… |

3 | Kunstsociologie I: Inleiding | LWX027P05 |
Arts Sociology introduces students to how sociologists study the arts. Starting from the questions about how to define art sociologically, and what sociology is, the course subsequently turns attention to and focuses on consumption of art and culture, based on the critical sociology perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s distinction theory, calling attention to the connection between cultural consumption patterns and social stratification. As a further elaboration of this perspective, the course discusses the omnivore thesis that has been introduced as a way of nuancing distinction theory, and, lastly, gives an introduction to cultural policy studies. |
