5 | Policing (in) American Culture | LAX043M10 |
This course will offer an interdisciplinary investigation into the history, practice, and representation of policing in the United States. Many consider the police to be a given: fulfilling the most crucial functions of the state, the police preserve public order, ensure safety, and apprehend evildoers and criminals. Critics, however, have pointed out that policing as we know it today is in fact a relatively modern institution arising from the need to control unruly populations and to secure the property of ruling elites - including, crucially, slaves. Still others have pointed out the various ways in which cultures (and American culture in particular) have a tendency to police various forms of difference, exerting a powerful normative force which breaks the social order into “respectable” and “dangerous” classes, usually along lines of race, gender, ethnicity, citizenship status, and class. We will address our topic from various disciplinary angles. Objects of study will include documentaries such as Ava DuVernay’s 13th, works of activist history like Kristian Williams’ Our Enemies in Blue, fictional works such as Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Purloined Letter,” literary criticism such as D.A. Miller’s The Novel and the Police, ethnographic works such as Alice Goffman’s On the Run, TV series such as The Wire, films like Training Day, and podcasts like “Running from Cops.” We will also discuss certain recent advances in policing practices, including the increasing reliance on big data analytics and digital surveillance, as well as the recent BLM protests and calls to reform or abolish the police. |

6 | Politics & Culture 21st Century US | LAX041M10 |
Inspired by Hannah Arendt's 1972 essay collection, Crises of the Republic, this course examines the ways in which the still-young 21st century might or might not be usefully characterized as one in which the United States has found itself afflicted by a succession of crises, from the national security crisis ushered in by the attacks of 9/11 to the global financial crisis that began in 2007-08 and the ongoing "constitutional crisis" that some have argued the Trump presidency has precipitated.
We will study specific 21st century crises in detail, but also explore and seek to problematize the history and theory of crisis as a concept, while investigating the ways in which different forms of narrative culture, including novels, films and TV series, have represented various "crises" of the 21st century U.S. |
