1 | Advanced Project | HCSE30610
Students can choose to either: 1) Continue or extend their second year research project. 2) Like in the second year, students can choose to write, develop and implement a new research proposal. The project may also take place outside the university, for example in a company or research institute. Students will establish the necessary contacts for the realization of the project with guidance from the organizers of the Honours College. Supervision may be provided by a PhD student, and/or a postdoc, and/or a staff member, always with the mentoring of a staff member. Students are expected to plan their work themselves.

4 | Course Critical Thinking | HCSE10901
Critical thinking is mainly about examining your own thought in a constructive and critical manner. In some sense it is also about the application of proper scientific thinking in the rest of life. It is therefore also about being respectful of opinions, knowledge, and conclusions of other people. Especially those of smart people who have “done their homework” and as such represent expertise and potential important sources of insights from which you might benefit, even if you (initially) disagree strongly. Topics and question that will be addressed are: - How do we learn from experiences? - What is an educated mind, and what not? - Frames of reference for meaning giving - Transformative learning - Types of thinking and learning that can transform your understanding of the world - Zone of proximal development and uncomfortable thoughts - What is critical thinking? - Why conspiracy theories?

5 | Course Project Development | HCSE10802
In this course, students will get guidance to develop their own/group (research) project. Students can choose their own (research) topic of interest. The content and format of the project is designed in cooperation with the supervisor. The course outcome is a realistic plan for a research project, which will give you the unique opportunity to do research within our faculty on a subject in which you are really interested. This research plan is the basis of your second and/or third year research project.

6 | Discussion Series | HCSE30901
A discussion meeting about an actual topic related to research at our faculty.Staff members/Group leaders of the FSE will tackle the actual topic from their research field and lead the discussion.

7 | Individual theme study | HCSE21003
After following a course in either the regular degree programme or the Honours College FSE programme, a student may complete an additional individual assignment on a particular topic covered in one of these courses. Supervision will be provided by the lecturer of the course on which the extra Honours College assignment is based. The student is supposed to develop a plan of action in contact with the lecturer in question, and this plan of action should be strictly followed.

8 | Lecture Series | HCSE20900
Staff members/Group leaders of the FSE will deliver a lecture about their research field, outlining local activities and the international context. This activity is mandatory and will take place six times in total.

9 | Opening Symposium | HCSE10200
During the openings symposium students will learn more about the Honours College FSE programme. In an interactive way students also are getting to know each other. By means of presentations and workshops different paths in science will be demonstrated: academia, commercial and societal. This gives students an orientation for the choices they have to make during the Honours College FSE programme. The Opening Symposium will take place on one afternoon and evening (8 hours).

10 | Organization Opening Symposium | HCSE21202
Two second and/or third year HC students can organize the HC symposium for first year HC FSE students. Besides the organizational task, the students in charge should also actively participate in at least one of the symposium activities that are being organized. They will write a report/article about the symposium. For example they may lead discussion sessions on chosen topics during the symposium, report and elaborate on the outcome of the discussion. Next to the opening symposium the students also organize for one year the lecture and discussion series in cooperation with the coordinator of the Honours College programme.

11 | Practical statistical hypothesis testing | HCSE21605
Most of the FSE degree programmes feature Statistics courses, and it appears that most of these courses are very challenging. Many Statistics contents are squeezed into 1-2 compact courses, so that there is not enough time for explaining the underlying mathematical concepts in detail. The main focus of this Honours College course is to provide a more thorough introduction to the important scientific concept of statistical hypotheses tests. The main focus will thereby be on practical applications, so that the underlying ideas and concepts of different test types are explained in an example- and data-driven way. Within the weekly computer practical's first a tutorial on basic R programming is provided, before the presented statistical tests are implemented and applied to data (without calling specific R commands or packages). In particular we will discuss: (1) parametric tests (e.g. the Student's t-test), (2) non-parametric tests (e.g. the Wilcoxon test) and (3) computer-simulation based permutation tests. All these test types will be implemented in R and we will perform computer-based simulations to study the properties of these tests.

12 | Research Project | HCSE21310
Students can choose to write, develop and implement their own research proposal. The project may also take place outside the university, for example in a company or research institute. In these cases, students will receive guidance from the organizers of the Honours College in order to establish the necessary contacts for the realization of the project. The FSE Honours College could also offer a choice of research projects to be developed within local research groups and supervised by staff members and their collaborators. Projects may touch one or possibly more aspects of the three lines of the FSE HC activities (academic, commercial, science & society).

15 | Tutorial | HCSE11002 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Students can choose from about 10 different tutorials. The content and format of the tutorial is designed by the lecturer in question. Students will work in small groups (4-8 students). The tutorials consist of 4-5 interactive meetings with the teacher in question, and will take approximately 3 hours per week during 4 weeks in total.
