1 | Applied Operations Research | EBB888B05 |
Students will work out (in groups) a number of case studies on practical applications of planning and scheduling problems in, among others, production- and distribution logistics, telecommunication, maintenance, and public transport. Based on the case studies, students have to write a report and give a presentation during the course. Much attention will be paid to the possibilities and difficulties encountered when using simulation as a flexible method to analyze the process of complex stochastic systems. Special attention is given to statistical analysis of the output and optimization with the aid of simulation. Guest lectures covering a number of OR application areas provide an overview of how OR models and techniques are used in practice. |

2 | Asset Pricing for Pre-MSc &Minor Finance | EBB133A05 |
Asset Pricing is a course about the financial assets through which corporations can raise funds, and particularly about the valuation of these financial assets. The course first sets the scene by describing ownership and control characteristics of corporations, and how these relate to their financing. Subsequently, it elaborates on valuing financial assets. For this purpose, the time value of money, interest rates (or yields) and the valuation of bonds are discussed. Also stock valuation models will receive ample attention. In addition, modern portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model will be introduced and used to explain expected returns. A final issue will be the valuation of financial options, using both the binomial option pricing model and the Black-Scholes option pricing model. A central theme throughout the course will be the law of one price, which dictates that equivalent investment opportunities must trade for the same price in all markets. This law will be presented as one of the corner stones of valuation. |

3 | Behavioural and Experimental Economics | EBB086A05 |
As the name suggests, this course has two main themes: behavioural economics and experimental economics. They are interconnected, as behavioral economics (BE) is typically informed by insights from experimental research. Introduction to behavioral economics: Oftentimes, we are not the flawless, time-consistent maximizers of our own expected utility that neoclassical rational choice theory assumes us to be. Instead, we tend to make choices that are not in our long-run self-interest. For example, we delay unpleasant tasks and are tempted by short-term pleasures. Our choices are susceptible to the framing of decision-making problems because our cognitive abilities to solve them are limited. Also, we are willing to sacrifice our own interests to help others. The behavioral economics part of the course will teach you the basic theories that describe the above behaviors, including basic prospect theory, hyperbolic discounting and theories of fairness and altruism. Introduction to experimental economics: How do people really behave? Experimental economics (EE) examines this question empirically. We will discuss experimental research on various topics (e.g. market experiments, game theory experiments, labor market experiments). You will learn about the standards of experimental economics and the main types of experiments. We will make a direct connection to behavioral economics by discussing experimental evidence on the behavioral view of human decision-making. We will not only talk about experiments but also do some classroom experiments ourselves. There will also be a group assignment, where the task is to work out a proposal for an economic experiment. You will present this proposal in class, incorporate the feedback that you get, and write up the research proposal as a paper. Note that the schedule is irregular as the course is front-loaded with lectures. In the first three weeks there will be three lectures per week; in the next week two lectures, and in the last three weeks one lecture per week. The reason for this front-loading is that 25% of the grade is based on an assignment (the abovementioned research proposal for an experiment). To be able to write this assignment, students should learn about the experimental methodology and the types of experiments first - hence the many lectures in the first few weeks. For the exact times please consult the website rooster.rug.nl |

7 | Comparative Country Studies | EBB686A05 |
This course provides students with analytical tools to analyze and compare market and business environments in different countries. Such analytical tools will comprise both 'hard' and 'soft' perspectives to gain an understanding of the nature of different national business environments. Concretely, it will involve on the one hand comparing key macro-economic indicators to assess strategic market conditions (factor and demand market conditions) and on the other hand a comparative business systems perspective focusing on institutional influences (the cultural, political, financial and labor system) on business systems (including the nature of economic actors, of market organization, of work coordination and control systems). It is suggested that only this combined analysis will deliver managers and businesses a full picture of market and business environments in different countries. In empirical terms the course will focus on comparing countries with contrasting business systems. |

8 | Contemporary Theories on B&M | EBB098A05 |
This course aims at analyzing some salient themes/theories in Business and Management. Students are challenged to adopt a critical approach with regard to the validity of the knowledge derived from these theoretical insights. Students have to : - understand the contribution of the selected theories to the discipline of Business and Management - make a critical assessment of the theoretical foundation on one of the theories - make a critical assessment of the empirical validation of the theory - identify its major limitations The course consists of two parts: 1. The first three weeks five introductory lectures on four specific contemporary themes/theories are offered. 2. The last three weeks of this period students will select one of the themes and discuss some additional papers in smaller working group sessions (nine groups about 30 students per session, each divided into 10 sub-groups of 3 students). The students will assess the distributed literature under supervision of a lecturer. |

9 | Corporate Finance for Minor Finance | EBB134A05 |
In this course, the lessons learnt from studying the valuation of financial assets, will be applied to the valuation of real assets, such as factories and machines. Various methods for real asset valuation will be considered, including the Weighted-Average-Cost-of-Capital method, the Adjusted Present Value method and real options approaches. Also ways to derive expected future cash flows (being an important input for real asset valuations) from accounting statements and other information will be discussed. In addition to the valuation of real assets, the financing of firms will be covered in this course. Taking the irrelevance theorem as a starting point, the course will explore the consequences of, for instance, taxes, agency problems and information asymmetries, on the capital structure of firms. A similar set of arguments will be applied to firms' pay-out policies. |

10 | Corporate Financial Restructuring | EBB088A05 |
Corporate finance assumes that managerial actions on corporate strategies increase market value or shareholders’ wealth. Corporations implement several strategies for financial restructuring. Merger and acquisitions (M&As) and diversification are growth strategies, a divestiture is a downsizing strategy, and leveraged buyouts or going private are strategies to change ownership. M&As, in particular, are worldwide common strategies estimated to be worth trillions of US dollars. Therefore, they can have a considerable impact on both domestic and global economies. Interestingly, empirical studies have found results that those strategies do not always create value. It is clear that corporate restructuring activities occur in highly complex environments where strategies provide unique opportunities with considerable risk. This course deals with the causes and consequences of those complex activities on creating value. Students are expected to understand the theoretical foundations that explain the reason as well as the observed or real effects of financial restructuring activities on corporate value and performance. Students are required to work in teams to prepare presentations of research papers and case studies and also to write a team paper about their analysis on value creation of a real life example of M&A or restructuring activities. |

13 | Culture and Economics | EBB090A05 |
In this course, we discuss the increasingly recognized role of culture (interpreted as shared values, norms and beliefs) on economic behaviour and outcomes. The course consists of two parts. In the first two introductory lectures, we sketch a general overview how cultural differences in recent years have been theoretically and empirically linked to differences in economic outcomes and the conduct of international business respectively. This recent trend is positioned against the background of a discussion why economics traditionally used to ignore cultural explanations, and how it struggles to incorporate cultural factors now. The second part of the course consists of three lectures, in which we go deeper into the impact of values, norms and beliefs for economic behavior and outcomes. One lecture deals with the impact of differences in attitudes and value orientations for economic behavior; another with the impact of differences in norms about kinship and family relations; a third about the role of differences in religious beliefs on political and economic outcomes. At the end of the course, students should be aware of the cultural contingency of economic outcomes and behaviors, and be able to relate form an informed assessment of the promises of cultural explanations in economic thought. |

17 | Digital Marketing Analytics | EBB105B05 |
In simplistic terms, digital marketing is the promotion of products or brands via one or more forms of digital media. However, digital marketing is not merely adding digital channels to the media mix; it is about integrating digital into all facets of marketing. Major companies like Unilever and ING increasingly shift their marketing budgets from traditional to digital media which underlines the growing importance of digital marketing. Beyond this, a rise of new digital-only market players (i.e. Zalando and Amazon) can be observed. The aim of this course is therefore to show what new challenges and opportunities marketers face in the digital age and provide students with strategic and analytical skills to (1) understand the fundamental constructs and principles of consumer behavior in the digital age, (2) describe the implications of the digital revolution for business model formulation, (3) compose a customized digital marketing program for a given organization, and (4) track performance indicators for digital marketing activities like online advertising. |

23 | Ethics and International Business | EBB608B05 |
This course deals with a range of ethical issues related to international business. Examples of ethics issues emerging in international business are —among others— corporate rights, bribery and corruption in a global context, human rights, taxation, inequality. In this course, we will address questions such as: What are the ethical rights and duties of corporations in a global context? Should multinational corporations apply the ethical standards of the countries where they operate or are there universal moral principles? What are the implications of international business on income inequality? Do the wealthy have obligations towards the poor? To address these and related questions we will examine the main theories in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and moral psychology. The course is set up in highly interactive ways, and we devote a large part of the time to a number of important and well known cases from international business ethics by means of collaborative assignments. |

24 | Ethics in Business and Management | EBB100A05 |
Corruption, responsible sourcing, sweatshops, gender discrimination, cultural relativism - these are only a few of the numerous ethical challenges we face in business and management. But research in moral psychology shows that we often fail to see what is morally important about a situation. And if we do see it, we often do not know how to deal with it. And even if we know how to deal with it, we often do not act accordingly. This course takes a practical approach to business ethics. Its main objectives are to foster sensitivity to moral aspects of decision making in business and management; to teach analytic skills that help you take a position in moral debates and to give a reasonable justification for your position; and to develop ways to successfully cope with dilemmas and issues that arise. We examine the main theories in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, and moral psychology, and we consider specific issues concerning ethics management. The course is set up in highly interactive ways, and we devote a large part of the time to a number of important cases from business ethics by means of collaborative assignments. |

27 | Financial Statement Analysis for E&BE | EBB081A05 |
Financial statements represent the basis for a wide range of business analysis techniques. Managers use them to monitor their firms' performance relative to competitors, to inform external investors, to help in determining new financial policies, and to calibrate their investment strategy by evaluating potential new acquisitions. Security analysts use them to rate and value companies on which they issue recommendations. Bankers use them to determine loans’ terms and potential lending extensions. Investment bankers use them as a basis for valuing and analyzing prospective M&As. Consultants use them in performing competitive analyses between their clients and peer companies. Overall, this course provides a framework for using financial statement data in a wide variety of business analysis and valuation contexts. |

28 | Foreign Dir. Investment, Trade & Geogr. | EBB037A05 |
The international economy confronts a firm with many uncertainties: currency values, trade barriers, curbs on international investment, and the degree of macroeconomic stability in countries where production is carried out and/or goods are traded, are but a few of the factors which influence a firm’s daily operations and long-term (strategic) planning. In order to allow a firm to succeed internationally, its managers must not only understand how these factors impact the firm’s competitive environment, but also how they are likely to evolve in the future and why. This course introduces the student to the economic theories which help the manager understand the market forces driving the global economy, as well as the consequences of the international economy for how governments are likely to implement economic policies. These insights provide an essential input to the management decision-making process. In this course we will mainly focus on the financial aspects of globalization. This course follows up on the first year course IB environment that deals with trade theory. This course deals with the monetary and financial dimensions of globalization, and the changing geography of economic activity. |

30 | Generalized Linear Models | EBB883B05 |
The course gives an introduction to the field of generalized linear models (GLM), which are an extension of the standard regression model (alternatively called the linear model). The GLM comes into play if the assumptions of linearity and/or normality – the usual ingredients of the standard regression model – are violated. GLMs are often used in actuarial science and risk insurance, for example to model the number and the size of claims. Hence, GLMs are particularly important to students with in an interest in actuarial science. However, this course gives a general introduction to GLMs in a broad statistical context. |

31 | Global Business History | EBB038B05 |
Why are some countries rich and others poor? The course Global Business History studies this question by focusing on the historic evolution of the business firm, a key factor in economic development. A study on the determinants of successful entrepreneurship in the past may help to understand why we observe the things we see today, such as the cross-country income differences mentioned above. Often, a roadmap of the development of the firm in years, decennia and perhaps even centuries before provides insight in today’s state of affairs. In the words of Winston Churchill, the further backward one looks, the further forward one can see. Therefore, this course explores the history of the business firm in an international perspective. We do so by studying the evolution of the business firm in time and space as well as the evolution and variation of the conditions under which business has operated in different parts of the world. |

35 | Globalization - The Great Unbundlings | EBB083A05 |
This course has three related objectives: a) It provides the basic conceptual framework necessary to understand the fundamentals underlying globalization; b) It examines the main phases experienced by globalization and c) It highlights the wide-ranged impacts associated to globalization. Globalization is framed around the articulation between production and consumption, making it possible to delineate three milestones. First, the pre-globalization phase whereby production is bundled with consumption, featuring some important developments such as the Neolithic Revolution, the rise of Middle-East and Asia as the epicenter of the global economy, etc.. Second, the first phase of globalization, which features the unbundling of production and consumption due to the steamship revolution. Third, the second phase of globalization, which saw the unbundling of production and its deployment to different parts of the world, the result of the advent of information and communication technology. Impacts of globalization are examined in terms of deindustrialization in developed nations and premature deindustrialization in developing nations, changes in income inequality between nations and within nations, the rise of populism, etc. The course gives an important consideration to academic papers which cover the mains themes of this course. Students are expected to present these papers in the tutorial sessions with the goal to highlight the scope of the paper, how it fits into the broad them of the lecture, the approach taken, the main results, and the critical assessment. |

37 | Growth and Development Economics | EBB811B05 |
Why are some countries richer than others? What are the main determinants of successful development? Why do some countries grow rapidly, while others are left behind? And what does this mean for people in those countries: who are the poor and what can we learn about inequality within and between countries? By applying empirical techniques and theoretical models, you will gain a deeper understanding of the driving forces of development. We will discuss topics such as the measurement of income differences, inequality and poverty; the interplay of inequality and growth; the role of structural change and linkages between sectors in development; and the role of government, geography, natural resources and culture in stimulating or hindering the process of growth and development. |

38 | Growth, Institutions and Business | EBB022A05 |
Economists are increasingly aware of the fact that path dependency characterizes processes of economic growth. Choices made by economic actors in the past have a far-reaching influence on the nature and rate of growth in later periods. Economic behaviour which at first sight might seem unfamiliar and even irrational, can be quite logical when the historical context is taken into account. We focus on the question of prime determinants of growth and change. We will analyse to what extent economic growth is driven by factor substitution and/or the introduction of new (general purpose) technologies. We will then pay attention to fundamentals of growth, like institutions and culture and geography in shaping development. In our discussion the main economic growth models will receive ample attention. Additionally, the application of a historical and comparative perspective gives insights in deeply engrained differences and the impact of variety on economic growth. |

39 | Health Economics | EBB120A05 |
Health economics is a subfield of economics. It can be described as applying economic principles to analyse health and healthcare. This course offers an introduction to health economics. It aims to give you an introduction to key concepts in health economics and to describe how health economics may inform policy debates worldwide. In this course, we explore and discuss how economic principles can be applied to health and healthcare. We focus on the characteristics of health and healthcare in high income countries. We describe the supply side (e.g. medical doctors) and demand side (e.g. people already with medical conditions, as well as other individuals facing uncertain future health outcomes) of healthcare markets. We explore a canonical model of individual decision-making with regard to health, as well as the socioeconomic context in which such decisions are made. We consider insurance markets for healthcare and ways in which they may fail. We discuss the pros and cons of government intervention in attempts to correct for market failure. Finally, we examine how economic decisions are made regarding the introduction of new healthcare interventions. |

40 | History of Economic Thought | EBB934A05 |
History of economic thought presents the development of a science as an historical process and a continuous debate, which involves far more than simply selecting the right and rejecting the wrong theories. In this course we study changes in ideas of what constitutes good economics, focusing on three key formative periods: classical economics, the marginal revolution, and the birth of macroeconomics. The approach is partly chronological and partly conceptual, as ideas from the philosophy and sociology of science will be used to explain how economic theories change. The study of economic theories will be based on writings of key economists of the past, like Smith, Jevons and Keynes. |

41 | Human Resource Management for BE | EBB065A05 |
Human resource is one of the most vital factors shaping organizational success or failure. In contemporary business, managing human resources in organizations (Human Resource Management, HRM) is about aligning the work that people do with the overall organizational strategy to achieve corporate successes, and also about fueling people's self-actualization and prosper. Traditionally, HRM decisions involve job designs and assignments, recruitment and selection, assessment, motivation, rewards and the separation of employees. In response to the trend of globalization in today's business, diversity and cross-culture have also become crucial concerns in HRM. These HRM decisions have far-reaching consequences, including not only financial gains/losses and legal implications for the organization but also employability, productivity, and wellbeing of individuals within the organization. This course aims to help you understand what HRM decisions are and how to effectively manage corporate human resources in order to boost both corporate gains and individual successes. In addition, understanding HRM will likely help you to traverse relevant HRM skills at current or future jobs that you will pursue following your education. |

43 | Innovation Management B&M | EBB107A05 |
The management of innovation processes helps both entrepreneurial new ventures and established organizations to innovate successfully. Firms frequently require various internal and external sources that are important for innovations. In this context businesses face several challenges to successfully recombine different sources of knowledge. Students will approach the management of innovation by learning how organizational and industrial context shapes innovation and which strategies firms apply to innovate and generate value from innovations. We start with discussing the characteristics of knowledge from an economics perspective and the relevance of innovation for firms and society. Introducing different types of innovations and the role of innovation for industrial dynamics will allow students to build a thorough understanding of the context in which firms innovate. Based on these insights we discuss the relevance of various actors in the process of innovation and collaborations among them. Discussing the challenges of managing the innovation process when tapping into external and global knowledge sources will complete this course, and allow you to understand better how organizations innovate in an increasingly open and global innovation system. |

44 | Innovation Management in Multinationals | EBB034A05 |
The course Innovation Management in Multinationals introduces the complexities of innovation management in multinational firms. Because multinational firms operate in several countries, innovation management increases in complexity. For instance, how do you organize your innovation efforts: one central R&D department or several departments in different countries? How do you encourage knowledge sharing among different locations? How do you create effective teams when the members are living in different countries, representing different cultures? This course offers an introduction to innovation management in multinational firms that is structured around several topics: (a) the innovation process, (b) business models, (c) collaboration and networks, (d) multinational teams and (e) knowledge management. The course combines plenary lectures about these themes (with lots of interesting recent examples) with practical assignments in smaller groups where students apply the knowledge gained to a specific situation (i.e. a specific company and innovation). |

45 | Intermediate Asset Pricing | EBB084A05 |
Intermediate Asset Pricing is a course about financial markets, and particularly about the financial assets that are traded in these markets. The course first sets the scene by giving an overview of the various types of financial assets that are available, and the ways in which these instruments are traded. Subsequently, it elaborates on valuing financial assets. For this purpose, modern portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model will be discussed. The course will also discuss debt instruments and their associated yields, and models to value equity. A final issue will be the valuation of financial options. Central themes throughout the course will be the informational efficiency of financial markets and the trade-off between risk and return. Both themes will be presented as corner stones of valuation. |

48 | Intermediate Microeconomics | EBB852B05 |
TThe course focuses on the fundamental microeconomic tools that economists use to explain a variety of social phenomena. Topics covered are: what economics is about, consumer and producer theory, partial market equilibrium, general equilibrium theory, market failures, uncertainty and asymmetric information. Next to the textbook, a number of empirical papers will be studied to gain understanding how microeconomic theory is used in applied research to answer questions like: Do higher gasoline prices shift auto-purchases towards more fuel-efficient vehicles? Are tax incentives for charitable giving efficient? Upon completion of this course, you will know how to do computations with the standard models and to explain the fundamental economic intuition associated with these models to a non-technical audience. You will gain experience in reading applied microeconomic studies and giving a well-founded assessment of the quality, scope and external validity of these studies. Faced with real-life problems, you will be able to construct theories to describe and explain the behavior of firms, consumers and markets. |

49 | International Bus.& Supply Chain Market. | EBB609B05 |
Firms operating in a Business-to-Business environment market goods and services to other firms, institutions, or the government, where their potential customers can be all over the world. Another challenge that firms operating in a business environment face is that they have to market and coordinate their goods and services along the supply chain. For companies, thinking in terms of added value instead of a product-focused perspective is key. Students will gain insights in the specialties of international business markets and business customers, such as that the customers are internationally operating firms rather than individuals, and that deals are closed between buying and selling centers consisting of several people. Other topics that will be covered are the management of products and services, price management, and sales management. Since market offerings in business markets are usually realized in conjunction with other firms along the value chain - both suppliers and customers - efficient management of the (international) supply chain will receive special attention, where students will experience the problems of supply chain optimization in a management game. Please note: Students who have followed Business & Supply Chain Marketing are not allowed to follow the Marketing master course Business Marketing. |

50 | International Business Law for IB | EBB635C05 |
Law is pervasive and shapes the space within which individuals and businesses interact. The legal rules in place influence, inter alia, what businesses can build and sell; how they can finance it; how they can protect their products and processes from unauthorised appropriation by others; and how they must behave toward others. Creating value for a firm and its stakeholders requires understanding the legal issues affecting businesses and devising a legal strategy that is an integral part of the firm’s business strategy. Although business managers can and should seek legal counsel, they must learn to spot legal issues before they become legal problems and ultimately must make the hard decisions based on the menu of options received from their legal counsel. Managers usually lack the time and the resources to seek legal advice on every matter, especially when they must act quickly on market opportunities. A basic awareness of the law enables them to move fast and appropriately. This course aims to introduce students to major areas of law that shape the interactions and operations of businesses in an international context. After an initial introduction to the concept of law, the course surveys main areas of international business law including law of contracts, tort law, company law, competition law, intellectual property law, international trade law, and international dispute settlement law. |

51 | International Business Strategy for E&BE | EBB023C05 |
The course is structured around plenary lectures and interactive teaching activities that relate to real-world cases. The course is organized along the lines of seven teaching cycles that offer a guided tour on principles of international business strategy. The heart of the course is a series of group meetings during which students analyze and discuss real-world business cases, extensively relying on and referring to the theory presented in the selected reading material (the course literature). Throughout the course, students (grouped in teams) will develop, execute and present their own research project, which aims at applying the theory learned in the course on a study of a Fortune 500 multinational company. Additionally, plenary lectures target the development of applied academic research in the international business strategy field, by discussing additional academic journal articles. The insights communicated during the plenary lectures are part of the final exam. |

57 | Introduction to Econometrics | EBB828A05 |
The course gives an introduction to econometrics. Especially the foundation of the econometric methodology around the linear model is emphasized. Taking the linear model as starting point several estimation methods (e.g. OLS, GLS, IV and GMM) and testing procedures are considered from different viewpoints. Both exact and asymptotic methods are treated. We provide some empirical examples of regression analysis which are societal relevant. These examples are instrumental in learning the students how to interpret regression results in an economic way. The students are supposed to complete 6 group assignments (maximum group size: 2). Some of these group assignments are of an empirical nature. In that case the students have to use the econometric software package STATA and to provide an economic interpretation of the regression results. The assiggnments also contain some theoretical questions which contribute to the understanding of estimation methods and testing procedures. |

61 | Labour Economics | EBB840A05 |
The market that allocates workers to jobs and coordinates employment decisions is the labour market. The labour market is unique; non-pecuniary factors, such as work environment, risk of injury, personalities of managers, perceptions of fair treatment, and flexibility of work hours, loom larger in employment transactions than they do in markets for commodities. Furthermore, a host of institutions and pieces of legislation that influence the employment relationship do not exist in other markets. Labour economics is the study of the workings and outcomes of the labour market. The main subjects in this course are labour supply and demand, wages and productivity, inequalities and discrimination, collective bargaining, macroeconomic and regional economic issues of unemployment, international migration and labour market policy. |

64 | Management Accounting for BE | EBB846C05 |
Management Accounting for Business Economics (in short: MABE) gives an introduction into the fields of management accounting and management control. Whereas financial accounting provides information used primarily by investors, creditors and other stakeholders outside the organization, management accounting focuses on information used by managers and employees inside the organization. MABE introduces various management accounting concepts and techniques (e.g. variable/fixed costs, relevant/irrelevant information), and stresses that different pieces of information must be used for different purposes. The course discusses costing systems and presents several techniques used to produce information for insiders. These techniques are: 1) cost accumulation, tracing, and allocation, 2) cost estimation, 3) cost-volume-profit analysis 4) budgeting and variance analysis, 5) differential analysis and 6) responsibility accounting. The course shows that financial and non-financial information must be combined to make adequate decisions. It also highlights the some key contemporaneous challenges of management accounting. |

65 | Management of Product Innovation | EBB652B05 |
The development of successful new products, processes and/or services is a challenge for many companies. Innovation processes are complex, and many stakeholders within and outside the company are involved. In this course the management of innovation is being taught, approaching the subject from different perspectives: strategy, management & organization, marketing, knowledge, etc.
The book that is used in the course gives input for an academic approach as well as for more practical applications. Most of the theory will be treated in the first three lectures. This part is finalized with a written (MC) exam in the fourth course week about 9 chapters of the book and six academic papers that are also used for the cases (see below). In the second part of the course students will work in groups on case studies from industries to illustrate how theory is being used in practice. They will be supported by parts of the book and the six academic papers mentioned. |

66 | Managing Intern. Bus. Organizations Game | EBB638B05 |
The course consists of weekly lectures, tutorials, a business panel session and an exam. The lectures orientate on the basic topics of the course and are based on the assigned literature in the Virtual Reader (see Nestor) Three of the lectures will be given by Managers from MNEs, who will present the internationalization path of their respective companies. Also, they will present in more detail a case problem relevant to the international position of their company. Students have to write an essay about the market position and performance of one of the companies and present a plan which addresses the case problem as outlined by the guest lecturer of that company. The last tutorial is in the form of a business panel, where business managers will be presented the best plans, as pre-selected by tutors. During the course, students will be trained to present their results in a convincing way to the business panel. They will learn to do the presentation in such a way that the panel is not only informed, but also prepared to accept the results. |

72 | Microeconomics - Industrial Organization | EBB067A05 |
This course takes a second look at microeconomic theory. We focus on the strategic interaction between firms. When firms set prices or quantities, they have to take into account how other firms may react to such choices. We study such interactions, using the tools of game theory. Amongst others, we study the strategies firms could use to gain an advantage over their competitors; how and when firms may be able to fix prices and how they may keep potential competitors out of their market. |

79 | Public Finance | EBB861A05 |
What should be the role of government in a market economy? How can we predict whether a proposed government program is likely to improve welfare? How should tax systems be designed to promote economic efficiency and to be consistent with basic views of fairness? The first part of this course focuses on basic welfare economics and the theory of public expenditure (public goods, externalities, public choice). We then move on to the sources of government spending: taxation and debt financing. We analyse the distribution of tax burdens and the efficiency and equity aspects of taxation. We discuss the pros and cons of debt financing, the burden of government debt for future generations and the dangers of running a deficit. The last part is devoted to decentralization, the financial relation between different layers of government and local taxation. |

80 | Purchasing & Supply Chain Management | EBB742B05 |
In today's business environment, most organizations are part of a chain or network in order to produce and deliver goods or services to the ultimate customer. As such, organizations have all kinds of relationships with one another and parties involved are connected through various business processes. The purchasing process is one of these business processes, linking needs and requirements of one organization with the supply of another. This course will focus on various concepts related to supply chains such as supply chain strategy, supply chain operations, outsourcing and relationship management between the focal firm, its suppliers and its customers. Moreover, purchasing is examined from a supply chain perspective and business functions related to both supply chain management and purchasing are explored. Attention will be paid to various working contexts and sectors (services, public sector) in order to clarify that common purchasing and supply chain management practices may not be used or applied in every context in the same manner. In this course, specific attention will be given to sustainability. Being of great importance in today's business environment, aspects of environmental and social sustainability and how these relate to supply chain management and purchasing will be explored and critically reflected upon. This course will allow students to become sensitive to sustainability issues and how these are dealt with, both in theory and in in practice. |

81 | Qualitative Research Methods for IB | EBB633B05 |
Besides quantitative research which is extensively used, qualitative research is increasingly employed by business professionals. The challenge is to perform qualitative research in a systematic and methodologically responsible way. Therefore, knowledge of and skills for these methods and techniques is essential for a scientifically educated practitioner in the field of International Business. The knowledge and skills can be used to do sound (qualitative) research yourself, and for interpreting and judging (qualitative) research of others. In this course some frequently used qualitative methods will be covered (for example, interviewing, case study, content analysis), and for each method the pro's and con's will be discussed. There will be also a practical assignment meant to exercise all stages of a qualitative research project, such as formulating research objectives, performing interviews, analyzing texts, discussing the results and finally, reporting the complete research process in a scientific report. |

82 | Queueing Theory and Simulation | EBB074A05 |
Queueing systems pervade our society, at shops, supermarkets, call centers and so on. It is common in such systems to make trade-offs between the costs of operation, e.g., hiring personnel, and service as perceived by customers, e.g., mean waiting time. To make such trade-offs one should be able to analyze the behavior of queueing systems and compute relevant key performance indicators. For this purpose we need models of queueing systems. The simple models can typically be solved with mathematical tools, but the analysis of difficult models requires simulation. However, even though simulation is very powerful, the development of useful simulators is based on profound insight into queueing systems in general, such as the dominating factors and aspects of the system’s behavior. Moreover, simulators require extensive testing, as bugs are easily made. Hence, mathematical models are also key ingredients in the development process of a simulator, to provide insight and a suitable testing ground. The aim of this course is to equip a student with a set of tools to analyze and improve queueing systems by means of simple mathematical models on the one hand, and with simulation on the other. The student should realize that both approaches complement each other: the simulations to analyze realistic queueing systems, the mathematical models to provide intuition, insight and tests. The course starts with providing a set of simple numerical models (recursions) to analyze and simulate realistic queueing systems. Then we develop mathematical models to analyse single server queueing systems and queueing networks, and show how simulation and analysis interact in the understanding of queueing systems and queueing networks. |

90 | Teamwork - Theories, Design and Dynamics | EBB110A05 |
This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to understand and appropriately respond to team dynamics in organizational contexts. As an HRM officer, you need to be aware of the complex relationships that affect processes in organizations. You also need to understand at which relationship level a problem is situated in order to address the problem appropriately. Therefore, team work is approached from a relational perspective, treating teams and organizations as dynamic entities. The lectures combine insights on organizational behavior with recent research from social and organizational psychology. The relevance of recent empirical findings will be illustrated relating them with theory and practice. Via lectures and reading of the literature, students will acquire advanced knowledge about the dynamics that unfold in organizational contexts. Through analyzing case studies and by working on assignments, students will learn to take into account different perspectives on critical situations in organizations. Working on the assignments will enable students to understand employees’ needs, team level variables, and organizational features and how these three levels interact. |
