1 | Biography and History | LLS052M10 |

3 | Mapping the Present | LLS049M10 |
Floods, freak hail showers, drought, dead bees, nuclear waste, infertility, mutations - the contemporary world seems more dystopian and unintelligible than ever. The present is characterised by a sense of crisis and anxiety: our notion of the future is infused by the threat of dispersed and intangible phenomena such as climate change and extinction. This course will explore contemporary strategies of making sense of surviving on a damaged planet. How can literature, the arts and different media help develop perspectives on life in the Anthropocene? We will collaboratively explore spatial and embodied approaches to materiality, posthumanism and extinction, drawing on cases from a variety of media, ranging from literature to film, photography, art and other media. |

4 | Migrant and Minority Writers | LLS050M10 |
In this course we propose to examine the theory of cultural transfer in relation to migrant writing and the notion of minority cultures. We are interested in the role of migrant and minority writers as cultural transmitters and bridge builders between cultures. We will contextualize literature of migrant authors and descendants of ‘guest workers’ that for political and/or economic reasons have migrated to or within Europe or Canada. We will also investigate to what extent literature of historical minorities can be contextualized in the same way. In order to define the notion of migrant and minority cultures and to have a critical tool-set ready, we will discuss theoretical texts that focus on different methodological approaches such as post-colonialism, hybridity, transculturality and subalternity. Particular attention will be paid to the position of young post-migration writers in the literary field, and to literary and media discourse regarding urban youths and street culture values. We will examine texts written by authors that pinpointed cultural minorities in the postcolonial era. Special attention will be given to developments in Indigenous methodologies. As the theoretical categories partially overlap, the course will cover a variety of literary landscapes. |

6 | Reading Cultures in Premodern Europe | LLS055M10 |
Reading in the premodern world (until 1800) was a multifaceted activity, including orality, textuality and aurality, and was both solitary and communal. What is “reading” and how can we study the act of reading in the premodern period? The course will approach these questions from an inter- and multidisciplinary perspective combining material studies (manuscripts and early printed books as objects with recognizable and distinct material features), textual studies (which texts were actually read during the premodern period? How about languages? Is there a difference between reading in Latin and in the vernacular?), and socio-cultural approaches (who were premodern readers? How did they get access to books and texts? How were reading communities formed and which role did these communities play in the transmission of knowledge?). It will also address the so-called “performance of reading” and study how reading techniques were created, taught and transformed and which impact books and reading had in the formation and evolution of premodern societies. "Cultures of Reading in Premodern Europe" will promote and stimulate a pan-European approach to the study of premodern (textual) cultures. |

8 | Theoretical approaches to European Lit. | LEU001M10 |
This course introduces students to selected theoretical approaches to literature. In the course we will focus on three traditions of literary and cultural analysis that have been dominant in literary scholarship throughout the last decades, namely the study of 1) form, 2) representation and 3) reception. In each week, students will be introduced to one, sometimes two theoretical approaches related to these fields of criticism and will become aware of their advantages and and possible limitations when applied to textual analysis. In the seminars, course participants learn how to use theoretical approaches and/or concepts as tools for critical literary and film analyses. |
