Leerdoelen The purpose of the course is to give 1st year students an idea of mathematical scientific research work. It is the intention that during the course the student will acquire the following skills: collecting information from various sources (scientific journals, books, internet) assessing the value of this information and processing it into own work writing a research proposal conducting mathematical research maintaining a journal (logbook) of the process and progress of the research project working together with fellow students having different backgrounds writing an article giving an oral presentation of research presenting a poster

Omschrijving The aim of this course is to introduce students to a number of aspects of mathematical scientific (academic) research. Conducting academic research is a process that you have to learn step by step. Just as with learning how to drive a car, it is not always easy to coordinate the different steps at first. Firstyear Project, and the actions to be carried out for the projects in this course, are meant as a first step and an introduction. During the other years of your Bachelor degree, you will be prepared further for doing mathematical research, e.g. in the Master phase. The course is coordinated by dr. D. Rodrigues Valesin. Various Mathematics staff members are involved in the supervision of the projects. Furthermore, some of the lectures are taught by invited lecturers.

The overall quality of the research is reflected by the grades for the article and poster. The contribution of the individual student to the research is reflected by the grades for the journal and poster. All grades have to be 5 or higher. The final grade must be 6 or higher. All scheduled parts of the course are oligatory.)
