Leerdoelen  The general learning objective is that the student knows the basic elements, methods and applications of both linear Multi Variable Calculus (also known as Linear Algebra) and nonlinear Multi Variable Calculus. More specifically, the student 1is able to determine vector properties (linear independence, basis,dimension) 2is able to analyse and solve systems of linear equations 3is able to setup and analyse linear transformations 4is able to perform matrix operations (multiplication, inverse) 5is able to compute determinants 6is able to compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors and employ these in practical applications 7is able to solve systems of (firstorder) linear differential equations 8is able to compute and analyse basic geometry (lines, planes and intersections) 9is able to perform partial differentiation and to compute extrema, gradient, tangent planes, linear approximations 10is able to perform and apply multiple integration 

Omschrijving  In this course, first basic concepts and skills in the area of linear algebra are discussed. Subsequently, functions of one variable are extended to multivariable functions, with topics such as: partial derivatives, directional derivatives, gradients, extrema and multiple integration. The material is illustrated through examples that focus on the applications of mathematical techniques.

Opmerkingen  Unlike in previous years, both exams (MT and ET) will be closedbook and might contain some of the exercises from the homework assignments. The midterm exam during the teaching period leads to the grade MT. The final exam yields the grade ET. The final grade for the course is computed from: When MT is higher than ET: grade = (2*ET + MT)/3 When MT is lower than ET: grade = ET The homework assignments do not contribute to the final grade.
