Uitgebreide vaknaam Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus
Leerdoelen At the end of the course the student is able to:
1. determine vector properties (linear independence, basis, dimension)
2. analyse and solve systems of linear equations
3. set-up and analyse systems of linear transformations
4. perform matrix operations (multiplication, inverse)
5. compute determinants
6. compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors and employ these in practical applications
7. solve systems of first-order linear differential equations
8. compute and analyse basic geometry (lines, planes and intersections)
9. perform partial differentiation, compute extremes, gradient, tangent planes, and linear approximations
10. compute integrals in 2 and 3 dimenstions
Omschrijving In this course, first basic concepts and skills in the area of linear algebra are discussed.
Subsequently, functions of one variable are extended to multi-variable functions, with topics such as: partial derivatives, directional derivatives, gradients, extremes of a multi-variable function and multi-dimensional integration.
The material is illustrated through examples that focus on the applications of mathematical techniques.

(The final grade, G, is computed from: 1) If both HW>ET and MT>ET: G = (3*ET + MT + HW)/5 2) If only HW>ET: G = (4*ET + HW)/5 3) If only MT>ET: G = (4*ET + MT)/5 4) If both HW<ET and MT<ET: G = ET As a constraint, to include HW and/or MT in the calculation, ET should be >= 4.5 ET: grade of final written exam MT: grade of the midterm exam HW: Average grade of the 3 highest graded homework assignments)
