Leerdoelen  After this course the student will be able to: 1. Solve simple (highschool level) mathematical problems involving algebraic expressions and basic functions. 2. Calculate limits using the limit laws and l'Hospital's rule. 3. Determine the continuity of realvalued functions. 4. Calculate derivatives with the help of differentiation rules and knowledge of the derivatives of basic functions. 5. Calculate a tangent line or linear approximation of a function. 6. Calculate the extreme values of functions. 7. Investigate the graphs of simple realvalued functions. 8. Solve optimization problems. 9. Apply the standard techniques of integration (substitution rule, integration by parts, trigonometric integrals and substitutions, integration of rational functions by partial fractions). 10. Calculate the value(s) of simple expressions involving complex numbers (algebraic expressions and trigonometric expressions involving Euler’s formula). 11. Solve simple equations involving complex numbers (quadratic equations and nth roots). 12. Solve separable and linear firstorder differential equations. 13. Solve homogeneous and nonhomogeneous secondorder linear differential equations with constant coefficients. 

Omschrijving  1. The main focus of this course will be on real functions f(x) of a real variable x. We will treat the following subjects: continuity, limits, differentiation, graph drawing, optimization, integration, complex numbers, and first and second order differential equations. 2. Besides the computational aspects, there is also attention to the applications of the treated techniques to Chemistry.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course is compulsory for firstyear students from the BSc Programs Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The course builds on highschool knowledge in mathematics. 

Opmerkingen  The combined grade is CG = FE + BS, where FE is the final exam grade (from 0 to 9), and BS (0 or 1) is the Basic Skills grade. If CG is larger than 4, then Final grade = max(CG, 0.2 HW + 0.8 CG, 0.2 ME + 0.8 CG, 0.15 HW + 0.15 ME + 0.7 CG), otherwise, Final grade = max(CG, 1). HW (from 0 to 10) is the average homework grade, and ME is the midterm exam grade (from 1 to 10). To pass Basic Skills (which gives BS=1), a student must either pass the first Basic Skills exam, or pass a series of 6 short exams, or pass the last Basic Skills exam. To pass the first or last Basic Skills exam a student must answer correctly 9 out of 12 questions. To pass the series of 6 short Basic Skills Exams a student must answer correctly 22 out of 30 questions (5 questions are given in each of the 6 short exams) and answer correctly at least 2 questions out of 5 in each short exam. For the resit exam the same method is applied but with the final exam grade FE replaced by the resit exam grade RE.
