Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- Explain the principles of cellular metabolism (integration of metabolic pathways, role of energy and redox cofactors, metabolite balancing, etc.);
- Explain the regulation mechanisms of metabolism (including kinetics and thermodynamics);
- Apply knowledge of the main biochemical pathways in primary carbon and energy metabolism (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, citric acid cycle, respiration (chemiosmotic theory), pentose phosphate pathway, glycogen and lipid metabolism), and about the existence of other pathways;
- Describe connections of metabolic failure with diseases, and understand relevance of metabolism with biotechnology;
- Explain the principles of human metabolism on the organismal level.
Omschrijving In this course, the students learn how cells build and preserve themselves, at the biochemical level. Specifically, they will learn the underlying principles how cells absorb, store and recruit energy and nutrients, and convert these nutrients into cell components via metabolic pathways. As careful coordination of these biochemical processes is crucial for cellular function, also the respective regulation mechanisms occurring at various levels will be taught. Finally, in a few lectures, also the key principles of organismal metabolism will be covered.

Opmerkingen The tutorials and the computer practicals are obligatory. Presence will be checked.

Digital examination is made up of two parts: The first examination consists of multiple choice questions. Only students who score at least 35% correct (adjusted for chance) on the multiple choice questions are allowed to do the second part of the examination with the open question exam. Students who score less than 35% in part 1, fail the course. The grade for the course is solely based on the score of part 2. In case, students do not obtain at least a 6.0, they need to re-do part 1 and part 2 in the re-exam. For the re-exam the same rules apply.

The courses within the bachelor programmes Biology and Life Science & Technology are open to students of those degree programmes only. Students from other degree programmes may be unenrolled. Please contact the academic advisors of Biology/LST first.
