Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) select science news
2) write and structure a science news article, a feature article and an interview article
3) distinguish and approach relevant and varied sources for a journalistic article and integrate the information obtained during research in a journalistic article based on various sources
4) define a science story idea based on journalistic news values and pitch a science story idea
5) conduct an interview and choose appropriate interviewing techniques and attitudes to obtain information that enriches the article
6) give constructive feedback to other students’ articles and revise an article by critically incorporating feedback
Omschrijving This course provides you insight into the field of science journalism.

The course you will train the skills that you need as a science journalist such as:
• Popular science writing
• Identifying science stories
• Pitching science stories
• Selecting sources
• Conducting an interview
• Writing a feature article
• Writing an interview article
• News article writing

Guest lecturers provide insight into the professional practice of science journalists and press officers. In the lectures the role of a science journalist and a press officer will be discussed.

You will write a a news article and two long articles: a feature article and an interview article. During the course we will work on both long articles, by first defining a story idea, writing a pitch, drawing up a writing schedule, doing research, conducting an
interview, writing a first draft and rewriting the article based on received feedback.

The lecturer and guest lecturers will provide feedback on your written assignments.
Students will read each other's texts during the course and provide feedback.

The course contains ten interactive lectures (30 hours). Lectures are interactive and therefore mandatory.

Considerable time is set aside for (writing) assignments and self-study.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit Science Communication Skills (5 ECTS) must be completed.

For students who take this course as an elective: the language requirements for this course unit differ from the rest of the faculty. All students for whom English is not their native language (except Dutch students with VWO-level English or students with a bachelor's degree from an English-taught programme) must satisfy the following requirements:
- Speaking, writing: IELTS 7.0 (TOEFL 95, CEFR C1, Cambridge English CAP > 180)
- Reading, listening: IELTS 6.5 (TOEFL 80, CEFR B2/C1, Cambridge English CAE > 160)
