Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) Define stars and list their observables (using the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram) – Knowledge; 2) Explain the observational evidence for the present chemical elements in the Universe (nuclear binding energy, solar composition) – Comprehension; 3) Classify the nuclear processes leading to the evolution of the elemental abundances in stars (burning stages, charged nuclear reactions, neutron/photon nuclear reactions) – Comprehension and Application; 4) Distinguish and investigate the important nuclear reactions within burning stages (bottlenecks, breakout from cycles) – Comprehension and Analysis; 5) Categorize the possible astrophysical sites where the elements are produced – Analysis and synthesis. |

Omschrijving | The aims of this lecture course are to give a comprehensive overview of the origin of the elements in the Universe (nucleosynthesis) and to understand the nuclear processes leading to the observed abundances of elements and isotopes in nature under various astrophysical conditions. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
