Many-particle systems and quantum theory of solids |
Leerdoelen |
To acquaint students with the modern quantum theory of solids |
Omschrijving |
In this module the main concepts of the modern quantum theory of solids will be described, as well as the main theoretical methods of dealing with them. The module will be built around two key notions: order and elementary excitations in solids. Different types of ordering in condensed matter systems will be described based on the Landau theory of phase transitions. Properties of different Fermi and Bose systems will be considered, including Bose condensation and superfluidity, Fermi liquid theory and its generalizations. The magnetic properties of solids will be extensively discussed, including modern concepts such as resonating valence bonds, topological excitations, etc. Special attention will be paid to different instabilities in solids. The properties of the systems with strongly correlated electrons (Mott-Hubbard insulators, Kondo and heavy-fermion systems) will be considered. All these phenomena will be dealt with using modern theoretical methods such as Green functions, Feynman diagrams, Bogolyubov transformation, which will be introduced and explained during the module. |
