Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. Critically assess a constitutive theory from the point of view of continuum thermodynamics. 2. compute, or provide accurate estimates of, the elastic properties of composite materials 3. (depending on the selected topics) explain multiscale plasticity of crystalline materials 4. (depending on the selected topics) compute the effective elastic and plastic properties of foams 5. (depending on the selected topics) describe damage development leading to ductile fracture 6. (depending on the selected topics) explain the multiscale aspects of high-temperature creep failure. 7. (depending on the selected topics) describe fracture mechanisms in terms of cohesive surfaces 8. (depending on the selected topics) quantitatively explain the difference between flexible and semi-flexible polymers and characterize their elastic response. 9. (depending on the selected topics) describe the coupling between electricity and elasticity in piezoelectric materials. |

Omschrijving | Materials derive their properties from their composition and from their microstructure. But what is the precise relationship between structure and property? The field of Micromechanics develops tools to make such relationships in a quantitative way, for a varying classes of material properties. This course is an introduction to the field, with an in-depth treatment of a handful of topics that are selected together with the students. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
