Leerdoelen At the end of the internship the student is able to:
• work in a professional organization related to the field of applied physics;
• develop and/or apply knowledge in the field of applied physics to investigate research questions formulated in a research environment outside the university;
• develop and/or apply research methods to answer the scientific question(s);
• systematically plan and organize the requested scientific research;
• draw conclusions based on the research outcome;
• produce concrete output that is of prime interest for the professional organization like a working experimental setup or software, a detailed design or report;
• summarize the output in a clear and structured scientific report about the research, including abstract, introduction, approach, results, discussion and conclusions;
• deal with boundary conditions such as intellectual property rights and non-disclosure agreements;
• reflect critically on his/her own attitude and adapt if necessary.
Omschrijving The internship aims to make students acquainted with research outside the university. It is an individual research project that is carried out within a research laboratory of a company in industry. The internship can also be done in a research laboratory of an institution abroad.

Contact person and examiner for this internship is most often the professor who supervises the final research thesis.

The following steps are part of the industrial internship protocol:
1. Together with the local examiner/supervisor of the university, the student chooses and contacts a company or institute for the internship.
2. The student, examiner, and daily supervisor from the company/institute fill in the Registration and Planning Form -- see the Student Portal. The form should be sent to the programme coordinator (via the Education Support Desk, or via mail: escphysics@rug.nl) who will register the project and asks for approval by the Board of Examiners.
3. At the end of the project, a report should be written. The report should be between 5 and 10 pages long and should contain at least the following sections: abstract, introduction, approach, results, discussion, and conclusion. 4. The project will be assessed and approved according to the criteria described in the Industrial Internship assessment form -- see the Student Portal.
5. To finalize the internship:
a) a copy of the report must be uploaded to the repository of the university library by the student;
b) a copy of the assessment form, signed by the examiners, must be handed in at the desk of the ESC by the examiner.
