Leerdoelen | At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. translate a specific question or topic into a targeted literature search, and execute it using modern search engines; 2.extract the needed information from the scientific papers effectively and quickly; 3. understand the differences between different types of publications and their purposes and how they are evaluated by the peer review and editorial processes; 4. structure a paper in a coherent way, know where to put/find different types of information and figures; 5. present the discussions on the scientific content by evidence based arguments and write them sing appropriate language and tense that ensures accuracy of meaning; 6. build up a scientific presentation based on their research results; 7. prepare the presentation slides in the right number and optimal quality; 8. deliver a presentation with proper visual impact and deal with questions from audience; 9. handle possible problems before and during the presentation; 10. correctly acknowledge the work of others, how to paraphrase and how to distinguish between ‘plagiarism’ and ‘good academic practice’. |

Omschrijving | This course is a mandatory part of the Master Research Project and will equip students with basic academic skills needed for their academic career and beyond. The students will acquire competences on: i) how to adopt a coherent strategy for searching the scientific literature online and using research databases; ii) developing critical thinking by reading and interpretation of assigned scientific papers; iii) clear and concise writing of scientific manuscripts including plotting of graphs and accurate way of referencing for submission to journals followed by mock peer review process; iv) presenting the scientific content of the written manuscript in well-organized talks with appropriate visual impact, including critical self-reflection; and v) understanding academic integrity, the need for it, correctly interpreting and acknowledging the work of others thereby avoiding plagiarism. |
