Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) propose a novel research idea that can be executed by a PhD-student in their field.
2) formulate a realistic and well-argued research plan.
3) explain and sell their research idea to a wider audience (for example, their Nanoscience-peers).
4) explain and sell their research idea to the experts.
Omschrijving During the second year of the Top Master Programme in Nanoscience, the student will write a research proposal for a PhD-project.

For the actual proposal, a template will be provided.

The process of writing a proposal can be supervised by the supervisor of the Master Thesis, but also by another principle investigator who is on the list of examiners for the Master Nanoscience. It is also allowed to have the same supervisor as for the Review Paper or Small Research Project.

For more information:
1. Information about examiners
2. Complete list of examiners.

The student must meet regularly with his/her/their supervisor to formulate an idea and approach, and to put it in writing.

Note: the student has to make clear agreements with the supervisor to make sure that the supervisor has time to give feedback on the draft version, to assess the final proposal and to give a grading advice to the course coordinator.

The timeline for the course (including kick-off meeting, scientific pitch instructions, progress and feedback meeting) is described below, see remarks.

Deadlines and grading consequences for missing deadlines for the Top Master Nanoscience:
The deadline for the FINAL version of the proposal is 1 March. If this deadline is missed, the maximum grade (as per Top Master rules) is 7.5.
The second deadline is 1 May. If the second deadline is also missed, the maximum grade is 6.5 (again per Top Master rules).
These guidelines apply to all (partial) examinations where you need to turn in, or finish, a certain assignment for passing the course.
More information about the PhD Research Proposal can be found on the Nanoscience student portal page.

Opmerkingen Examples of research proposals:
Examples can be found in the Brightspace course and on the student portal page (see: archive).

- Half October: kick-off meeting (2h).
- 15 November: deadline update declaration of choices regarding topic and supervisor PhD proposal.
- Late November: lecture about giving a pitch (2h).
- Half January: progress meeting (4h) where the students have to give a pitch.
  • The pitch will count for 10% of the grade, the proposal for 90%.
  • The course coordinator will define the partial grade for the pitch.
- 1 February: deadline to submit DRAFT version of the proposal. The draft has to be sent to the supervisor by email and course coordinator via Brightspace.
- 1 March: The student must send a pdf of the FINAL proposal to the course coordinator via Brightspace and supervisor by email before 1 March, 23:59h.
  • Student has to upload PhD Research Proposal to repository, check the instructions on the student portal page.
- 1 April: Subsequently, the supervisor sends a grading advice for the proposal to the course coordinator before 1 April according to the assessment form instructions.
- The course coordinator will moderate and define the partial grade for the proposal after a comparative check with the other proposals and assessments, to ensure that there is uniformity in the grading of all the research proposals by the different supervisors.
- The course coordinator calculates the final grade and sends the final grades to the FSE Student Administration.
- Early May: Feedback meeting (4h) course coordinator with students.
