Leerdoelen 1. The student can relate the performance characteristics of imaging equipment to the
• underlying physics principles,
• design specifications,
• technology used.
2. The student is able to argue which image quality metric is most suitable for a certain task.
3. The student can explain the basic principles of tomographic image reconstruction.
4. The student can classify the various magnetic resonance imaging parameters and sequences with respect to image contrast between tissues.
5. The students can summarize how radiotracer requirements impose restrictions on the properties of the radioactive isotopes used in nuclear medicine.
6. The student can make and present a high-quality scientific presentation on the detailed design, operation and performance of a state-of-the-art imaging device.
7. The student obtains quantitative information from the qualitative knowledge gained during the lectures.
8. The student gets an idea of how the imaging equipment is implemented in the hospital.
Omschrijving Imaging is a cornerstone of modern healthcare and its importance is expected to increase in the future. The operation of imaging facilities in hospitals as well as the development of imaging equipment require the skills, knowledge and understanding of engineers. This course provides such knowledge and understanding. The physics principles, instrument design and image reconstruction of the following imaging modalities will be discussed:
• in the field of nuclear medicine: single gamma-ray radiography and tomography, positron emission tomography
• in the field of radiology: x-ray radiography and tomography, magnetic resonance imaging
• in the field of hadron beam radiotherapy: ion beam radiography
