Leerdoelen Afer sucessful completion of the course, the student is able to:
  1. relate the image formation, image quality andperformance characteristics of imaging modalities to the
    • underlying physics principles
    • design specifications
    • technology used
    • operational parameters
  2. explain the requirements for 3D imaging as opposed to 2D imaging.
  3. obtain quantitative information from the qualitative knowledge gained during the lectures.
  4. write a high-quality essay on the detailed design, operation and performance of a state-of-the-art medical imaging device.
  5. give a basic description of how imaging equipment is implemented in the hospital.
Omschrijving Imaging is a cornerstone of modern healthcare and its importance is expected to increase in the future. The operation of imaging
facilities in hospitals as well as the development of imaging equipment require the skills, knowledge and understanding of engineers.

This course provides such knowledge and understanding. The physics principles, instrument design and image reconstruction of the
following imaging modalities will be discussed:
  • in the field of nuclear medicine: single gamma-ray radiography and tomography, positron emission tomography
  • in the field of radiology: x-ray radiography and tomography, magnetic resonance imaging
  • in the field of hadron beam radiotherapy: ion beam radiography

(First, the written exam and the assignment are each scored on a scale from 0 to 10. Next, the weighted mean score of the written exam (weight = 65%) and assignment (weight = 35%) is calculated. The final grade on a scale from 1 to 10 is obtained by multiplying the mean score by 0.9 and adding 1. A student passes the course if this final grade is higher than or equal to 5.5.)
