Leerdoelen 1. Analyze the complexity of the problem and the context of an (inter)disciplinary area via literature review and/or stakeholder analysis.
2. Propose an adequate conceptualization of the object of study, by means of a process or system description, or any other relevant type of modeling,
3. Define an adequate problem definition and research- and/or design objective, based on the given analysis and conceptualization
4. Propose appropriate research- or design method(s) and research (sub)question(s).
5. Select and validate methods/tools/techniques to be used to address the defined research (sub)question(s), thereby reaching the defined goal and solving the defined problem.
6. Justify methodological set up of (research or) engineering assignment, while adhering to an academic attitude, that is, being:
• Accuracy
• Consistency
• Quality of reasoning / logic
• Adequacy
• Critical attitude
• Fact- and/or evidence-based
Omschrijving IEM methodology aims to select the best applicable or useful method(s), tools and research setup for solving an IEM (related) design assignment or project. A typical IEM engineering design is characterized by an initial usually broad scope and ill-defined problem in a technological oriented business setting, which usually requires a thorough design goal definition, based on an in-depth problem analysis, system description and stakeholder analysis.In general two different paths are possible, development of design theory (process) or developing artefacts (it works as it is). An academic attitude is expressed in fact-finding by literature search, interviews and experimental work if needed.
The course unit practice to set-up a discussion on IEM methodology and realize a research design in the IEM work field, as a preparation for the two large final projects in Master IEM: Research Project and Design Project. In four weeks, students work in groups on assignments and case work full-time. In the first two weeks, Monday to Thursday starts at 900 h with lecturing on specific topics, as an introduction to assignments, which are finalized at the end of the day in a feedback session or a Q&A. Fridays are used for repair. In the final two weeks groups work on a real life case. During the week, question hours are planned with supervisors and students can interview an informant who works on that particular case. Thursday week 3 and 4 are scheduled for presentations.

(For both the Oral Exam and the Report, a rubric is used as a frame of reference for assessment. The rubric is available to students via Nestor. Students pass, if all learning objectives are assessed as 5.5 or higher.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from a previous study on IEM Methodology, e.g. Research and Design Methodology of IEM Bachelor RUG, or related course units. If the prior knowledge is not adequate, students should follow a repair program.
