Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. Set-up appropriate design goal and constraints and planning related to sustainable development in terms of economical, societal, and environmental contexts; 2. Applying analytical methods as building sets of scenarios and performing quick scan life cycle analyses for evaluating implications of the design; 3. Systematically develop innovative solutions; 4. Develop adequate communication skills on normative values, such as to write a normative reflection on the design. |

Omschrijving | Nowadays, engineers are more challenged to adequately handle trust on competence, fairness, and loyalty of the society. As a professional, engineers increasingly work independent compared to a more strict hierarchy setting of 1-2 decades ago. In lectures and workshops the participants are trained in specific aspects of making an innovative and sustainable design, e.g. ethical aspects, interpreting scenarios, and performing life cycle analyses. Invited lecturers from industry and government report from daily practice. Cases focus on applying theory in design applications. In case work and a role play, participants develop their personal professional assessment. The course will show how decisions in future career will have an impact on local and global societies, and provides tools to perform well balanced assessments in future work. | ||||||||||||||||

Entreevoorwaarden | The course unit is compulsory for the MSc Chemical Engineering specialisation Polymeric Products and Industrial Catalysts and for the MSc Chemistry specialisation Catalysis and Green Chemistry and for all MSc Industrial Engineering and Management specialisations. | ||||||||||||||||
Opmerkingen | The assessment is connected to the learning objectives mentioned above. More specified: Groupwork Setting sustainability conditions: • Problem definition related to Triple P and innovation • Application of sustainable development elements (such as equity, market, energy, United Nations goals, etc.) Application of sustainability methods • Application of Life Cycle Analysis • Building a set of scenarios • Other sustainable design analysis methods Design solution assessment: • Reflection on Triple P sustainability improvements of design • Ethical considerations involved • Technical feasibility of developing concept design solution Peer review • The ability to adequate comment on other group case work Individual contribution The final mark on the individual assignment is the average of sub marks on: a. Insight on Triple P considerations; b. Critical academic analytical thinking and usage of sources of information, books, papers, and internet and ethical considerations c. Ability to critical review literature resources and reflect on own work The group case work may function as a starting point, but the contents of the group work should not be applied in the individual contribution. General remark Finally, on assessment, aspects as 'analytical academic thinking' as mentioned in the learning objectives (see above), are not directly graded, but are seen upon as basic requirements, that is, all statements, estimations, assumptions should be carefully supported by calculations and reliable (literature) sources. In this respect, it is assumed that, if relevant, both individual and group work incorporate knowledge and insights from the general literature sources on the Nestor website.
