Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. read and understand up-to-date scientific literature on microbial growth kinetics/bioconversions, and on biocatalytic processes. 2. identify the advantages and disadvantages of using enzymes/micro-organisms in a specific industrial process (selected cases) and how to control/counteract them (attainment level 3). 3. design an industrial bioconversion and biocatalysis process (on selected cases) (attainment level 3). 4. synthesize a strategy on how to implement his/her designed processes in practice (technological and economic feasibility) (attainment level 5 and 6). 5. write two reports: 1 with a group of students on a biocatalysis case study provided by industry (attainment level 2,3,4,5,6) and 1 individual report on a bioconversion case provided by industry 6. present his/her results to the peers and stakeholders (attainment level 6). |

Omschrijving | This module will cover different topics in the practical/industrial use of microorganisms and enzymes in various industrial processes ranging from the production of specific food ingredient components such as flavor and coloring compounds, the production of advanced antibodies or advanced pharmaceutical ingredients, to the large scale use of micro-organisms in cleaning up polluted soils and application in for instance waste water treatment. The course starts with a short introduction to the basic principles of biocatalysis and bioconversions underlying specific applications followed by illustrative examples on the practical use. Students will be given assignments supplied by companies. So, up-to-date real cases on biocatalysis and bioconversion projects (or ideas) for which the companies are looking for more • background knowledge on options for using either enzymes or microbes, • selection best strategie(s) • both the technological and economical feasibility • recommendations for further research / actions to be taken, and/or • implementation plan Both an individual case as well as a case for a group assignment will be provided. Students need to share progress with each other at regular work discussions and an peer review meeting (intervision) somewhere halfway the course. They will give an oral presentation of their results to the client (the company provided the case). Each student has to hand in an individual case report (demand driven bioconversion case), and a group report (demand driven biocatalysis case). These reports will also be supplied to the companies. |

Onderwijsvorm |
Hoorcollege (LC), Opdracht (ASM), Werkcollege (T)
(Presence at lectures, intervison meeting halfway the course and the final presentation is mandatory.) |

Toetsvorm |
Presentatie (P), Verslag (R)
(Weight: R 80%, P20%. For both the reports as well as the presentation of the individual presentation the grades need to be 5.5 or higher to be able to pass the course. The presentation of the group-report (biocatalysis case) will not be graded as such. Just a fail or pass, and if done excellent 0.5 point extra can be earned for the biocatalysis case report.) |
