Vakcode WMFA15001
Vaknaam Nanomedicine and nanosafety
Niveau(s) master
Voertaal Engels
Periode semester II a

Uitgebreide vaknaam Nanogeneeskunde (drug targeting, drug delivery, organ-on-a-chip) en nanoveiligheid
Leerdoelen At the end of this course the student is able to:
  • describe the biological properties of nano-sized materials in relation to both their applications in medicine (drug targeting, drug delivery, and organ-on-a-chip devices) and the potential risks of nanotechnologies (nanosafety);
• investigate different aspects of the interdisciplinary research in nanomedicine and nanosafety: synthesis of nano-carriers and targeted drugs, physico-chemical properties of nanomaterials in biological conditions, typical outcomes of nano-sized materials at cellular level, in vitro and in vivo, and current concerns on the potential toxicity of nano-sized materials (nanosafety);
• evaluate in groups literature on current challenges and latest developments in these different aspects and present their conclusions in an oral presentation.
Omschrijving This course covers the following topics:
• applications of nano-sized materials for drug delivery and drug targeting (such as liposomes, other lipid and polymer based drug carriers, inorganic nanoparticles, antibodies and immunoconjugates etc.), and current challenges in these fields;
• nanomedicine for organ-on-a-chip devices
• drug carriers and targeted drugs currently on the market and in clinical trials
• the biological properties of nano-sized materials, including challenges in nanomaterial design for successful targeting and barriers to drug delivery;
• methods to characterize nanomaterials in biological environments (size, charge, stability in biological fluids such as blood);
• interactions of nanomaterials with living cells and organisms (uptake, distribution, final fate, eventual effects on cellular functions);
• potential risks and safety concerns for nanomedicines and nanomaterials not intended to be in contact with humans and living organisms (other nanotechnologies).
Uren per week
Onderwijsvorm Hoorcollege (LC), Werkcollege (T)
(Lectures: 20 hours; tutorials: 8 hours; symposium: 4 hours (mandatory attendance))
Toetsvorm Presentatie (P), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(The exam consists of open-ended questions. The group project is a literature study, the conclusions of which will be presented to the group. The final grade is determined by the exam (60%) and the group project and presentation (40%))
