Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Explain the various causes of climate change
2. Interpret biogeochemical cycles, especially the global carbon cycle
3. Apply the radiocarbon and the stable isotope analysis methods to investigate global change related problems
4. Apply the obtained knowledge on IPCC matters
Omschrijving GENERAL: Global Change (GC) encompasses all anthropogenic disturbances to the Earth's climate, already leading to an evident increase in the mean temperature and changes in weather patterns. This will also heavily influence our societies, primarily by changing water and food availability. Statements about manmade Global Climate Change require a thorough understanding of the undisturbed system.

First, the isotope chemistry relevant for GC will be described, as well as general dating methods. Second, GC will be related to biogeochemical cycles, greenhouse gases, and aerosols. Third, the (synthesis report of the) latest IPCC report will be discussed, as well as how to extract the proper information from it, and how to relate that information to GC.

Entreevoorwaarden Prior knowledge: The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from basic mathematics and physics courses.
Maximum capacity: 90 students. Priority for students from the Master EES (Energy and Environmental Sciences).
The course unit is a specialisation course for the Master energy and environmental sciences and is an elective course for the MSc Mechanical Engineering (Courses in Business and Management).
The course unit prepares students for master thesis work at the center for isotope research (CIO), geoenergy (GEO), and energy conversion (EC), in which the learning objectives attained may be required as prior knowledge.
Opmerkingen Pass mark: Both the project report and the written exam (digital exam) require a minimum of 5.0.
The final mark will be calculated as 0.2 x assignment + 0.3 x project report + 0.5 x written exam. The project will be evaluated based on the submitted report.

Assuring test quality: The lecturer prof. dr. H. Chen compiles the test and prof. dr. H.A.J. Meijer evaluates the test in a peer review process.

In case the assessment has to take place online, the written (digital) exam will be adjusted to an online written (digital) (open book) exam from home.
