Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1) use systems thinking to evaluate the sustainability aspects of production and consumption systems
2) judge the sustainability aspects of production and consumption systems based on life cycle assessment
3) design and compare integrated systems (with a focus on energy systems) at different spatial and temporal scales considering multidisciplinary factors.
4) apply linear programming as a tool to assess systems for sustainability
Omschrijving In this course the following key concepts are treated:

(i) elements of systems thinking
(ii) concepts in life cycle assessment
(iii) linear programming concepts
(iv) design and evaluation of systems
(v) design and evaluation of integrated multi-disciplinary
systems.

All assignments and lectures relate to the sustainability aspects of production and consumption systems with a focus on energy systems. An important part of the course is acquiring practical skills by assignments and tutorials.

Entreevoorwaarden Preknowledge: Bachelor in natural sciences or related field.
And: The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired in Sustainable Use of Ecosystems and Impacts of Energy and Material Systems.

1st-year master students from the EES master programme are participating in the course unit.
The course unit is compulsory for the EES master programme.
Maximum capacity: 60 students. Priority for students from the Master EES (Energy and Environmental Sciences) for whom this course is obligatory.
The course unit prepares students for the research internship/research projects in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
Opmerkingen Pass mark: (Average assignments grade * 60%) + (Final take home assignment e * 40%) > 5.5
Failure to submit assignment results in grade 1.
Minimum grade required for final take home assignment is 5.5.

Quality assurance: Standardized evaluation of assignments using rubric and/or correction model (ideal assignment).
Prior to assessment: Two examiners review quality of assignments and answering models.
After assessment: Second examiner performs random checks of the assessment outcomes.
