Leerdoelen Aim:
To provide students with knowledge and understanding of the nature and characteristics of energy and materials resources, their applications, scarcities and impact on the climate.

Learning objectives:
After the course, the student is able to:
1- Explain the nature and characteristics of different energy and materials resources.
2- Examine the effect of energy and materials utilisation on the earth’s climate system and to assess/develop mitigating concepts.
3- Apply a physical-system approach to issues associated with energy and materials utilisation.
4- Analyze the impact of materials scarcity on changing global demand and the potential for replacement through recycling.
Omschrijving In this course, we will systematically analyze the physical/chemical characteristics of energy resources and materials. The energy resources are analyzed through a system analysis of the full energy chain, including greenhouse gas emissions. Materials are analyzed from resource to waste (excluding the use phase).

The course consists of 3 main elements:
1) Planet Earth and the Climate Model: geological history, physical concepts and lessons from paleoclimatic analysis.
2) Energy: basic thermodynamic principles, resources, characteristics, energy conversions and economics, renewables and possible remediation of GHG emissions.
3) Materials: resource base, source/sink analysis, scarcity, waste & recycling.

(Written exam (five or four open questions, 80%), Assignment (consists of report and excel sheet with calculations, 20%); The two assignments are scored individually and then averaged.)

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from a Bachelor's degree in natural sciences or a related field.
First-year master students from the MSc EES are participating in the course unit. The course unit is compulsory for the MSc EES.

Maximum capacity: 60 students.
Priority for students from the MSc EES for whom this course is obligatory.

The course unit prepares students for the courses in the second semester and the research projects in the second year, in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge.
Opmerkingen Each assignment must be completed and handed in. The average score of the assignments should be passing (>5,5), and the
score of the written exam (≥5.0). The final grade will consist of assignments (20%) and a written exam (80%).

No mandatory presence for the scheduled activities.

In case the assessment has to take place online, the written exam will be adjusted to an online written exam from home.
