Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) to write science news articles for different target groups based on an academic publication with news value.
2) write a journalistic or educational feature article for a broad public about a self-selected science subject.
3) process feedback on a draft text into a publishable article.
4) apply various conversation techniques effectively in an conversation.
5) recognise and name his own strengths and pitfalls when participating in a conversation.
6) improve his presentation skills.
7) give effective feedback and suggestions to the other participants regarding conversation and presentation skills.
8) design a strategy to clarify a scientific subject, based on learning theory and communication theory, and can report this strategy orally.
Omschrijving This course is the starting point of the EC master. This course can also be chosen as an elective.
The course offers an introduction to the field of scientific communication.
During the course, writing, presentation and conservation skills are developed. These skills are important in order to be able to
exercise the profession of teacher or science communicator.
You write a news article, an article for children and an educational or journalistic feature article about a science subject for a
general public.
Also you will develop a communication strategy, supported by learning or communication theory to clarify a science-related concept.
The aim of the strategy could be to convey knowledge about a topic, to deal with alternative conceptions, or to influence opinions
or behaviour.
The course does not have an final written examination. At the end of the course you hand your assignments and you give a
presentation.
During the lectures you participate in discussions. You prepare the lectures by assignments. During the you hand in different
assignments. You give constructive feedback to your fellow students and incorporate received feedback into the final versions of
your products.

Onderwijsvorm Hoorcollege (LC), Opdracht (ASM)
(Interactive lectures: 60 hrs, Assignments: 80 hrs. Attendance is mandatory. Students are allowed to miss one seminar, which must be compensated with a substitute assignment. When missing more than one seminar, the student consults with the lecturer whether and how they can complete the course unit.)

(The average of the marks for all sub-assignments must be 5.5 or higher in order to be awarded a ‘pass’ for the course unit. No more than one 5 for a sub-assignment is allowed. The average of the three sub-assignments makes the final grade.)

Entreevoorwaarden Students must have gained a Bachelor’s degree certificate.
For students who take this course as an elective: the language requirements for this course unit differ from the rest of the faculty.
All students for whom English is not their native language (except Dutch students with VWO-level English or students with a
bachelor's degree from an English-taught programme) must satisfy the following requirements:
- Speaking, writing: IELTS 7.0 (TOEFL 95, CEFR C1, Cambridge English
CAP > 180)
- Reading, listening: IELTS 6.5 (TOEFL 80, CEFR B2/C1, Cambridge English CAE > 160)
Opmerkingen This module can be followed in the first part of the first semester and in the first part of the second semester. As a result, it is possible for students to start the EC Master's programme in the course of the year. Students must earn a pass for the Communication and Presentation module to be able to participate in the other modules of the EC Master's programme.
Max. number of students: 20. Priority for students from the MSc in Science Education and Communication.
