Leerdoelen | At the end of this course the student is able to: 1. work independently in a research topic on an academic level; 2. work in an interdisciplinary team of colleagues, experts and support staff 3. summarize the international literature related to the research topic of the research project 4. formulate a research plan and adjust it if necessary 5. analyze, interpret and integrate results and relate these to the state of the art 6. present her/his results in English by means of a written report as well as a oral presentation to an academic and professional audience. 7. make contact with potential supervisors, preferably external to the University of Groningen, e.g. at a company or other research institute, and to arrange a research project and where appropriate the resources necessary to carry out the project. |

Omschrijving | The second research project is a core module in the master degree course in Chemistry. It is to be completed with a report. The project is a compulsory part of the master. The student has to work independently on a research project in the field of Chemistry. The topic of the project and the project supervisor and research group should be different from that of the Master research project. Students are encouraged to perform their second research project abroad and/or in industry. The project involves the following steps: 1. The student may choose and/or define his/her own research topic upon discussion with Professors, PhD students or post-docs of the department of Chemistry. It is recommended that students consult with representatives of several active research group at the Chemistry department. 2. The student completes the second research project application form which includes a timeline and a short research proposal 3. A brief survey of the most relevant literature should be made 4. Actual work (experimental and/or theoretical) 5. Analyze, interpret and discuss results in relation with the state of the art (consult the literature) during regular discussion with supervisor/s 8. Write the final scientific report and obtain feedback from the supervisor/s 9. Give an oral presentation interpreting the research results and placing them into context 10. Assessment and marking 11. Providing the Education Support Centre with the following documents i) copy of the report, uploaded in the repository ii) evaluation form signed by the assessment committee (at least two persons: supervisor/s and additional scientific personnel); Assessment of the work and assignment of the final score will be performed according to the criteria described in the evaluation form |

Opmerkingen | Pass mark = 6. The student can only pass if all aspects (scientific quality of research; management of research; report and presentation) are graded 5.5 or higher. Note: The second research project is 20 ECTS and could be extended, before the start of the project, to 25 ECTS (at the expense of an elective course) after approval of the Board of Examiners. If the extension to 25 ECTS is approved please select course code WMCH19006 Second Research Project 25 EC in Progress. This course was registered last year with course code WMCH19004 |
