Leerdoelen At the end of this course, the student is able:
• to formulate the key research areas of chemical biology and can explain the (bio-) chemical background
• to design a suitable experiment for the study of a given biological problem, using the most important tools (e.g., native chemical ligation) in chemical biology
• is able to critically evaluate a research article on a new topic from chemical biology and can present and explain it to a group of peers
Omschrijving Chemical biology studies biology and the processes of life using the tools of chemistry. This course aims to provide the student with knowledge of the key areas of chemical biology and a good understanding of the chemical tools that are used, enabling the student to design experiments to study a biological problem of interest.
In the first part of the course, the most important techniques and methods in modern chemical biology will be introduced (e.g., native chemical ligation). Subsequently, the use of these tools will be illustrated using a number of case studies.
Finally, each student will complete an assignment. A research article from chemical biology will be presented during a mini-symposium with a focus on a critical analysis of the design of the experiments and how the authors used them to get to the conclusions. During this process, the students will have the chance to apply and integrate the knowledge obtained during the first part of the course.

(Written exam: 70%, Assignment: oral presentation: 30%. The grade for the presentation needs to be higher than 5.5 and the final grade of the exam and the presentation should be higher than 6.)

The course unit is often followed by, or prepares students for the research projects and the courses Synthetic Biology and Systems Chemistry and Organic synthesis:methods and strategy 2, in which the learning objectives attained are recommended as prior knowledge.
