Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
explain the general principles behind chemical probes, display methods and non-natural amino acid incorporation

apply these concepts to design tools that can be used to study biological problems that are similar to those discussed in the lecture
propose experiments including suitable controls to validate the chemical tools, display methods and non-natural amino acid incorporation methods.
analyze primary data that is obtained from chemical biology experiments and can write a conclusion on this data
critically evaluate a research article from chemical biology and can present and explain it to a group of peers
Omschrijving Chemical biology studies biology and the processes of life using the tools of chemistry. This course aims to provide the student with knowledge of the key areas of chemical biology and a good understanding of the chemical tools that are used, enabling the student to design experiments to study a biological problem of interest.
During the first part of the course, the most important techniques and methods in modern chemical biology will be introduced. In the last lecture, interpreting data from a chemical biology paper will be practiced using a case studies.
In the second part of the course, the students will critically analyze two closely related research articles from the field of chemical biology in couples. The couples will present the papers and their opinions on these papers during a mini-symposium. During this process, the students will have the chance to apply and integrate the knowledge obtained during the first part of the course

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Bachelor Chemistry or Bachelor Biology or LS&T. Basic knowledge of the reactivity of functional groups and (bio)molecules (for example taught in CHOC1-10, CHOC2-11 and WLB0702, WLP10B19 or course alike from different bachelors) is required. Furthermore, the students should have basic knowledge of the techniques used in biochemistry/molecular biology (for example acquired during protein engineering MLBB006).
Opmerkingen Presence during the symposium is mandatory. The grade for the exam needs to be higher than 5.5 and the final grade of the exam and the presentation should be higher than 6.
