Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.
formulate and discuss a specific scientific question using the most relevant literature and adhering to the guidelines.
2.

place the topic in its broader scientific context and summarize and discuss it in sufficient depth but concisely.
3.
compare and contrast the various approaches/methods discussed in the literature and formulate a personal opinion and conclusions.
4.
present the colloquium in a clear way to a group of peers.
5.
defend the conclusions, give adequate answers to questions and actively participate in a scientific discussion.
Omschrijving The student will identify, summarize, report and present the state of the art in a specific topic using the most relevant literature. This topic cannot be related to the topic of their Master's research project. In a written colloquium, the student will place the topic in its broader scientific context, summarize the various methods/approaches found in the literature, critically analyse them and formulate their own opinion in no more than 2000 words in a maximum of 8 pages (without references). The study will subsequently be presented in 15 minutes to a group of peers and is followed by a scientific discussion.

Entreevoorwaarden The colloquium is one of last study elements in the Chemistry programme to tackle. You should have passed more than 140 ECTS of course units, and you should have recieved a pass grade for the first research project.


The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from all the core modules of MSc Chemistry.
Opmerkingen Pass mark: The students need to obtain a final score of 5.5 or more according to the marking scheme above. If the final mark is 5.5, this will be rounded up to 6.0, which is the pass mark.

The course unit is at or near the end of the MSc Chemistry programme and makes sure that the student leaves the university being able to research, summarize and report (orally as well as written) on scientific findings when leaving the university. As such the course unit guarantees that the student is able to apply his background knowledge and understanding thereof.
